Why Am I not getting promoted?

Ok , I am 47 and have been working in the hotel industry for 25 years.
I am currently a hotel clerk making $9/H. i have asked to be promoted as a hotel managers in the past and the request has been rejected. I have sent to my corporate office(600 hotels) numerous bright ideas to improve the revenue of my group. But I never got any compensation for that. My suggestions were all applied.Now I have turned around the hotel that I work for and raise my occupancy from 40% to 80% in less than 3 weeks by advertising online. I was asked by my district manager to help a second hotel who is at 37 %. But I am getting nowhere. I am scared to ask for a compensation. I don't know what to do???!!

The Professor

Being a manager requires a very definite set of skills, not just being an "idea man," or a "hard worker." Some are social skills, some are financial, some are organizational. You need to be a leader, and a good teacher, and to command the respect (not necessarily the friendship) of the people who are underneath you. You need the appropriate formal education. We don't know if you have those skills or not, so it is hard for us to give you advice that will be helpful.

But here is some general advice:

If you want to sell yourself as management timber, figure out what you are selling. Make a list of skills and training a hotel manager needs, and inventory yourself on whether you have them. If you do, start compiling evidence supporting your claim to have the skills. If you don't, start acquiring the skills and training.

Once you have your arms around this problem in a more intentional fashion, you will be able to address the issue of promoting yourself to the management as manager material.

Many require a degree in hotel management. Go back to school and get one. Then maybe you will be too busy to keep posting this same scenario so much.

Just to add to what The Professor said: In a company large enough to own 600 properties, a university degree would almost surely be necessary.

Also, your English grammar (or is it just typos?) needs work. To make grammatical or typographical mistakes does not impress people who are used to a high level of expertise in that area. Sorry, I don't want to offend ... I'm just trying to be brutally honest here. Maybe some courses in report writing would help as well.

Congratulations on your accomplishments in raising the occupancy rates! I do hope someone at head office recognizes your expertise very soon; otherwise, they could lose a valuable asset, right?

Do you have a degree? That will keep someone from management in many companies. You'll need to get one.

If you do, go somewhere else. Send out resumes. Sounds like you have experience and another hotel chain would be happy to compensate you.
