Why Should the death penalty be abolished?

In my ethics class, this is our debated topic. I was wondering what you think. My side is debating why it is wrong. Also for whatever you have to say, you need to have something back up what you are saying. Also if you know how states have abolished the death penalty can you please tell me? Thaank you.

I'm about to argue a little with you, because I'm trying to practice my debate skills. First of all, 1. Financial costs to taxpayers of capital punishment is several times that of keeping someone in prison for life. Most people don't realize that carrying out one death sentence costs 2-5 times more than keeping that same criminal in prison for the rest of his life. How can this be? It has to do with the endless appeals, additional required procedures, and legal wrangling that drag the process out. It's not unusual for a prisoner to be on death row for 15-20 years. Judges, attorneys, court reporters, clerks, and court facilities all require a substantial investment by the taxpayers. Do we really have the resources to waste? Second of all, Life in prison is a worse punishment and a more effective deterrent. For those of you who don't feel much sympathy for a murderer, keep in mind that death may be too good for them. With a death sentence, the suffering is over in an instant.

Your point about the cost is right - sort of. Many people point to the appeals as the biggest additional cost, but that is not the case. The bulk of the additional costs of capital punishment are up-front, occurring before and during the trials themselves (I use the plural "trials" because DP cases usually require two separate trials - one to determine guilt, and another one for sentencing).

The additional costs of death penalty cases include more pre-trial preparation (most DP cases take over a year to come to trial), more pre-trial motions, more expert witnesses (on both sides), more attorneys (also on both sides), jury sequestration, security (needed because of more publicity in DP trials), an extra sentencing trial, AND an exhaustive appeals process.

The cost disparity becomes even greater when you consider the time value of money. Since most of the additional costs are up-front, it is more taxing (pun intended) on the government's coffers. Any first-year finance student (or lottery official) can attest that a dollar up-front is WAY more burdensome than a dollar spread over 30-40 years.

Check out the website below for more facts. Good luck in your debate!

No, sometimes it takes force to remove filth.

1) Innocent people have been executed.

2) Minorities are disproportionally sentenced to death.

3) The death penalty has not been proven to be an effective deterrent.

4) I believe in limited government, and no power of government is greater than the power to execute it's citizens.

5) Appeals in death penalty cases are costly. Life in prison is a substantial penalty, and less expensive than execution.

It shouldn't be abolished. In fact they should go back to immediate hangings on the Courthouse lawn and then let the carrion crows peck them. This Country's crime rate is completely out of control.
