Why are cigarettes legal? and pot is illegal?

i guess this all started back when they found tobacco, and poepl liked it and played for it, maybe if they found pot first people would like that more and MASSIVE companys would sell it and find out all the bad things after, imagine, if cigarettes were found sometime after pot and people discovered it was deadly, it may have been banned

It's illegal becuase it alters your mind and slows your motor skills & reflexes. I smoke both and I wish pot was legal I see no problems with it at all.

Because the tobacco companies make huge political contributions and have powerful lobbies in Washington. Pot smokers play video games and trip on music.

Tobacco lobbyists don't want the competition. Alcohol kills more people than pot EVER has. Marijuana should be legalized, regulated and taxed.

In some users pot can cause psychosis, paranoid ideas, low mood, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and psychological dependency which I believe is harder to cure than physcial dependency.

I heard somewhere that pot is made from a plant that is also very useful for other things (like making rope or something). And that a long time ago, there was some businessman who was in competition with a guy who made rope from pot or something. And the businessman lobbied congress to make pot illegal because he didn't want to have to compete.

That's no longer relevant, but it's still illegal because people confuse pot with harder drugs.

Most of the other answers have been wrong. It's true that tobacco cigarettes generate lots of tax money, but so would pot if it was legalized. And it's true that pot impairs judgment, but so does alcohol, and that's legal.

Cannabis contains a chemical determined to alter mental status in such a way it is detrimental to society while cigarettes don't. A better question is why isn't alcohol also illegal.

Because Pot can lead to drugs way more harmful and dangerous such as heroin, cocaine, meth, etc. Cigarettes aren't a gateway drug.

The government makes a ton of money from the taxes off cigarettes. That is the only reason they are legal..

But also, those taxes pay for our schools and healthcare, etc.
