Why are so many people in jail in the US?

Because we have so many laws at so many levels of government, that a good deal of the population is criminalized at any given moment. We have an especially huge number of prohibitive type laws, i.e., drug laws. These type laws work better in societies that are more politically, religiously, ethnically and socioeconomically homogeneous than ours, but not so well here. Diversity, rather than the positive asset that we claim it to be, is actually the direct cause of all human class conflict.

My personal take is to oppose any law that bans things. I support only laws that (1) ban behavior, and (2) where a named victim exists. Following this philosophy would immediately empty out half of some prison systems, and make that much more room for robbers, rapists, murderers, etc.

And by the way, I'm a retired Metropolitan Police commander.

that's just the way it is, here people think there are no regulations at all and they do whatever they want without thinking of consequences.

It is the easiest way for free food, shelter, and clothing. Don't even need food stamps to eat!

It's big bussiness. Most counties recieve an allocation of federal funds if they have a certain amount of population in jail. It makes sense to keep the jails full, because they make more money that way.

Because of the tougher sentencing laws and less parole. Crime isn't up, says some, but the sentences crooks get are longer.

because cost of living out side is too much.
and jails in us are quite neat and clean, food also is nutritious and healthy. hence the crime rate is more.

The fear of terrorism is haunting at the minds of US people and Govt. Moreover, laws are not very stiff, hence, rate of crimes is higher as the criminals think they will be free after some punishment.

Because police officers are paid on commission just like a normal sales rep at your local wireless store they need to hit a daily quota most people who are in jail now are in there for something stupid like not having an id on you drunk in public and belive it or not some of the crimes you can get 90 days in jail for

Because of liberalism.It is the idealogy of united states government.It has not been succeful in governing the society.The main base of liberlisim is indevidualism.Indevidualism leads people to do whtevere,their benefits leads.So, social benefit does not have any importance and any crime may appear.So many people are in jail in the US.

i would say the economy. the cost of living is increasing daily. minmum wage is $5.85. a gallon of milk is about $5 and a gallon of gas is over $3. it is hard unless you have an education beyond high school to make ends meet. i think a lot of people would rather the quick money. i mean with out a career and just working a job you are working on hour for milk. it's crazy. that's my opinion. unfortantely if you don't have the money to further you education you may become desperate and steal or try to self medicate.
