I'd say we'd have much better results by curbing Hollywood's right to fill TV and theater screens with films that glorify mass-murder. We have had guns in this country for 200+ years. How many mass-murders in school rooms occurred in:

Our spiraling violence of all types can be traced to one source. Hollywood and its glorification of violence and criminals. I'd say we would have greater success in controlling violence by censoring video games, Hollywood movies.

i have a suggestion for you. go try to purchase a gun today, any kind of gun, and you will see for yourself how strictly controlled the gun industry is...

and i dont want to be the one to burst your bubble pal, but, a baseball bat or a knife is no match for a colt .45 or even a peashooter like a .22.

and just so you understand, the founding fathers specifically enumerated the right of the people to keep and bear arms so that a radical, out of control governemnt could be opposed.

If just one of those students at Virginia Tech had a gun, this tragedy might have been averted.

One of the first things that Hitler did when he became chancellor of Germany, was to take away all guns from citizens, "for their own safety." We all know how that turned out.
The Second Amendment was written so that citizens could form their own militia to defend themselves from either invaders or a government that no longer represented their interests, i.e. a totalitarian regime.

Additionally, the guns that the Virginia Tech killer had were illegal. They had their serial numbers already filed off to make them difficult to identify ( the FBI has an x-ray process that can still get the numbers). Selling and possession of this type of gun is a felony.
Instead of targeting legal guns, and legal, law abiding gun owners, it would be better to enforce the laws already on the books, and establish mandatory "1 strike" sentences for possession or sale of illegal firearms.
No matter how many sweeps you might make to take guns away from the citizenry, there would always be a criminal underground in possession of firearms. They would rule the streets, and our way of life as we know it would disappear.

There are lots of problems with your proposal.

The appeals court for the District of Columbia has ruled that the 2nd amendment does protect your right to own a gun - sorry you think of our constitution as "crap". (link 1)

You state that banning guns will make you safer - please read the stats about violent crime in Europe where gun control is almost universal (link 2)

You mention that guns were established for protection of citizens and then just assume that we will always be safe. You are making a lot of assumption there with my rights and safety. I think I will stick to being able to protect myself and pass on your assurances.

Spelling correction: "bear" arms, not "bare" arms. The first one means "to carry" - the second one is a fashion statement.

So you think you can stop the violence by taking away guns... did you know there are books on how to make your own guns using metal smithing tools? Did you know the genocide in Rwanda was performed primarily with machetes? Did you know that the Columbine killers were going to use pipe bombs?

I've had people that are mentally ill threaten to cut me up and mail me to my relatives, and someone who is about twice my size murdered my grandparents. My wife wants me to be armed to protect her. You are making an extremely complex problem into something simple - and it isn't. A gun gives a decided strategic advantage in a fight - distance - baseball bats and knives don't. If someone is close enough for me to hit them with a baseball bat, they are close enough to take it away from me and use it against me. Gun ownership is a huge responsibility, but to punish those who play by the rules because one idiot doesn't is absurd.

BTW: if you think the US government hasn't on occassion killed its own people you are naive: the Tuskeegee experiment, the CIAs use of LSD on its own operatives without their knowledge, etc.

FYI! We responsible gun owners should not have to pay the price for irresponsible whackos like the Tech student. My family uses firearms for hunting purposes only. And yes it is comforting to know that I have guns in certain places in case I need to use them for protection. It's either me or the burglar. You people who think that taking all guns away is the answer. There needs to be a ban on all semi-automatic assault guns in this country, plain and simple. And the laws should be made accordingly for those who ignore that law. My husband and his friends thoroughly enjoy themselves on their hunts. I fact my 12 year old just passed her hunters safety class with a 90%. Just because people can get guns on the blackmarket doesn't mean all of america needs to be punished. Guns don't kill, PEOPLE KILL! Someone makes the choice to pull that trigger. And as far as gun rentals? You're really dreaming. There are so many types of guns out there. My husband uses several during a season depending on what he is hunting. Come to my house and see how we do things and then insult me. But don't take this issue and broaden it because not all of us are serial killers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that's because you have a very strong lobby in this country which gravely misinterprets the part of the constitution which gives the right to bear arms. while you certainly don't know who is going to freak out and run amok and when, there is no doubt that such outbreaks correlate highly with the fact that guns are pretty much readily available in this country- never mind laws, or the cliche saying that "people shoot people, not guns".
