Why can't your child's attorney speak to you even when you paid for him?

Melissa D
They have to retain the attorney-client privilege no matter who paid for them. They could be disbarred if they broke that without a good reason and giving the person who paid for them information isn't a good enough reason. But, think about it. When your child was younger did you say, "I'm paying for your birthday cake so I get to pick it out?" It's like saying "I gave you this money, now I get to know everything."
You're doing this to help them, not to control the situation. Let them and the attorney figure it out and tell your child you will help them in any way you can, just ask. Then, let them ask.

confidentiality.

Because they represent the child not you

Teekno
If your child is an adult, it would be a violation of attorney-client privilege for him to talk to you.

Paying the bills doesn't change privilege.

Hugo
Why would you want that? You could be subpoenaed for anything that you learn from your child's attorney. Privilege exists for a reason.

WOW! and proubly because they want there thingsw to be confidential and because ur child can stay stuff to them that they dont want to repeat .

Because (s)he is *your child's* lawyer. Your child is his/her client, not you, and (s)he owes a duty of confidentiality to that client as to any other client. There are no exceptions to that duty for parents.

because your not part of the investigation or even part of the case file. Just like what they say to the jury they cant talk about the case to anyone even loved ones. Because word my get out and someone might get hurt.

if they are above the age of 18 i dont think they can but if they are under 18 then you have your right as their parent
