Reagan ran on a promise to introduce a Constitutional ban on abortions. Not once in 8 years did he ever propose such an amendment.
It's a tool to get votes, nothing more. It locks down the hard-core right-wing ultra-conservative base -- as if they were going to go elsewhere, other than possibly stay home on Election Day. Both Bushes attempts to ban abortions were half-hearted at best.
They realize that if they made a serious push to ban abortion outright that it would alienate moderates and independents and drive them away from the party. Popular sentiment supports a woman's right to choose by well over 60%. Those numbers have not wavered much in decades. One does not deliberately bite the hand that feeds... |

Ummmm...Roe vs Wade maybe? |

They can't just overturn the Roe vs. Wade, it doesn't work like that..It still goes through Congress, the Senate and so on and so on..It would never make it far enough to pass.. |

No all Republicans are walking lock step in favor of anti-abortion legislation as same as not all Democrats are in favor of pro choice
I have seen a mixed bag of politicians
Politicians often go which way the wind blows |

Roe v. Wade made outright bans on abortion unconstitutional. I know you feel strongly, but you should be more familiar with an issue before calling others hypocrites. |

Most Americans don't agree with the GOP position. |

It will never happen.. And they're also hypocritical.. It's just a "get out the vote" tool.. Just like immigration.. Talked about a lot before an election, then it goes away as the winner is announced....
pro-life support dwindles in time.. Just like religion in general.. It didn't happen then, it's even less likely to happen in the future... |

Abortion is so controversial that it would not be in there best interests to do so. They can preach that they are against it for votes but not actually prohibit it to gain votes on the other side. |

Most of the American public believes it is the woman's right to choose. It is only a few who think that their religious views should predominate. |

It would be very hard (not to mention costly) to overturn ROE V WADE. The backlash that would happen from pro-choice groups (majority of people) would be HUGE! It really would not be in the best interest for the survival of the GOP |

Because they have run their campaigns over the last 30 years on a single minded platform. Take away their one bedrock issue and what do they have left? |

The problem has never been whether or not abortion could be banned by legislative action. Forget it. It can't happen. The S.Ct. decision in Roe v. Wade converted abortion into a constitutional right. The legislature could no more outlaw abortion outright than it could ban interracial marriage or prevent a racial group from voting.
The decision of Roe v Wade may be grossly dishonest intellectually, but it is the law of the land for the time being, and only a S. Ct. reversal of that decision could pave the way for the banning of abortion.
But the answer to that is that all a reversal would accomplish would be to return the debate to the state legislatures where it arguably belongs. How many state legislatures do you think are prepared to ban abortion outright? Maybe one or two?
I suppose that a national ban could be accomplished by constitutional amendment, but how likely would it be that three fifths of the states would ratify it? Not very, sez I. |

I would argue that they couldn't. The Democrats wouldn't have sat quietly for that in a million years. Just because you have a majority doesn't mean you can ignore the wishes of a large number of people in the country. Republicans would have been committing political suicide if they unilaterally agreed to ban abortion. |
