The other day some juvenile delinquents broke into my hubby's vehicle to steal his car radio. They also broke into my van and rummaged through a purse that was left in there, I can only assume looking for money. Little did they know it was a play purse for the kids filled with toys and books.
They did this right in our driveway. We live in a rural area with a very low crime rate.
So my question is: why do criminals steal one thing just to sell it in order to pay money to someone else? Why don't they just steal what they want in the first place?
It seems to me they are making twice the work for themselves and would be better off just getting a real job instead of taking things from honest people.

Because they don't have the guts to steal from the local drug dealer.
Also there is stuff they need cash for like bills from cell phone , cable, internet services and so on. |

OK, please try to think beyond your first conclusions. What's more likely to work: burglarizing a bunch of homes, undetected, until you have enough money to buy a car and register it; or steal a car you can't register, nor drive because it's on the stolen car list. |

They are probably using the money to buy drugs. Drug dealers watch their stashes like a hawk and are usually well-armed. It's safer for thieves to steal your stuff, sell it, and use the money to buy drugs than it is for them to try to steal the drugs. |
