Why do death row inmates still protest their innocence moments before they are executed?

unfortunately the justice system is not perfect and some innocent people do get executed.

There are a few reason why people state they are innocent, apart from actually being innocent. The most common is that they are frighten and are still trying to escape the execution. Other simply don't believe they committed the crime or were framed, although this can later be found out to be true it is usually a result of a mental problem or being under the influence when the crime was committed. Some people do it to cause enough doubt that there supporters still believe in them, parents are hard to change the minds of if they believe there child.

i ythink those that still say they are innocent at time of death probably are innocent,i think the whole thing is barbaric,two wrongs dont make a right,and i think those that carry out the killing are murderers,i read alfred pierepoint,the british hangmans book,throughout the book he said he knew what he was doing was right and justified,just before he died he changed his tune and said how sorry he was and how wrong it was,i think the whole thing is terrible.

First of all I do not believe there should be a death sentence not only because it is murder but also because I found it a greater punishment to rot in prison!!

Some may actually be innocent but most are fighting for their lives.

There are no other way to stop executions except by court order or suspension by law.

As for that desperation, it really depends, no judging, but if all will just believe what they say, then who will tell the truth.

Not all about-to-be-killed deathrow inmates do maintain their innocence to the very end. Some apologise to the dead person's family watching the proceedings. (now there is another whole topic for debate).
I have no idea how many mistakes the American judicial system makes about murder, but my guess is that many of the innocence claimers are just that, innocent. If they are black then the chances of their being innocent are higher.

This is not meant as an Anti-American answer; we Brits have a long history of executing the wrong person as well

Maybe some of them are innocent and maybe most of them are just not man enough to admit their crime and take the punishment.

~Unfortunately, we are guilty until proven innocent. I'm guessing most got Court Appointed Attorney's that don't know much. I can't think of any reason except that they probably ARE innocent. The police have to find someone blame.~

I'm sure some of them are innocent and shouldn't even be there in the first place. Others are guilty as sin, but still protest as they have done throughout their many years behind bars... Some may have been saying it for so long, they even believe it themselves.

There's a web site (look it up yourself) that has all the final statements of executed criminals from the State of Texas. Almost every one of them apologized to the family of their victims before having the juice pumped into them.

A few had no last statement.

A few said it was unfair because they didn't actually kill the victim, a partner in crime did.

A few said they didn't do it.
