It dates back to medieval times when people used to travel on horseback, if you saw someone coming in the opposite direction and you needed to fight you could draw your sword and have your opponent on your strong side. |

This goes back to medieval Britain. All countries used to travel on the left hand side as this left your right hand free to carry a sword. As everyone passed on your right side, this meant that you could easily defend yourself.
This changed due to Napoleon. As he was left handed, he changed the system. This meant that any country that was under French rule also changed to the right hand side. The US was partly colonised by the French, and after independance from the British, they wanted to get rid of all things British so switched to the right hand side. |

Ten years ago, one of the mysteries of the ancient world was solved - the Romans drove on the left. So did everyone else until Napoleon changed it to the right. The reason is not clear, but many people think it was to confuse his enemies (us). Everywhere his armies went, driving was changed to the right side. That spread to the French and Spanish colonies. America probably drove on the right because France was more popular with them than Britain. Until a few years ago, when China changed to driving on the right, most people in the world drove on the left. Napoleon was an admirer of the Romans. If he had known then which side they drove on, it could all have been different. |

Why do WE drive on the right? It's just the way it is, besides, if they made everyone in the UK drive like us, I could buy one of their cars and use it to deliver mail!!! |
|

David M

its becouse cars were built right hand drive then ford mass produced so instead of making them left a universal law was passed that you drive on the left (so drivers dont get hurt)
p.s -Great Britain |

Why do you drive on the right in the US?
Because it's a arbitrary convention of the country. |

Actually we did invent the English language because the US wasnt around when the UK was (the English language was around way before the USA) so the way we spell it is right. We should know, we invented it. lol
And we drive on the left because we are unique, and do not want to be the same as everyone else. |

I read somewhere that in many towns in the UK, many hundreds of years ago, the town councils stated that in order to free up traffic on market days, horse and carts where only to drive on one stated side of the road, if there was enough room to pass head to head and on other other narrower streets they were only allowed to travel in one direction, hence the one way systems you get in older towns in the UK. It not being possible to do a 3 point turn with a horse and cart and hard to reverse, they wanted to avoid jams and get the punters in easily, or people would go to a market where trading was easier.
The place it started for a town would possibly have been a bridge leading into a town, or the city gates, where a toll was collected from all traders. The side chosen side was pretty much at the whim of an official born a thousand years ago and it got standardized from there as smaller towns copied the bigger ones.
It's the best explanation I ever heard, maybe it's true. I the bit about one way streets is, read it in a book about Salisbury, in the UK. |

oblivion' is the correct answer. The reason the USA drive on the right is because they would control oxen when pulling waggons from the right side of the beast. |

because they're weird. these idiots apparently invented the English language, but their spellings are usually incorrect ...centre instead of center, colour instead of color, organisation instead of organization. i got red lines underneath all the british spellings, which means they're spelled wrong LOL |
