Why do people believe Marijuana is a horrible "gateway" drug?

Marijuana is not horrible. It is much less harmful than cigarettes, and less of a danger to society than alcohol. The main reason that marijuana is illegal is that in America's first experience with it, minorities were the ones smoking it. Alcohol and cigarettes were money-making industries, but weed was not. So, marijuana has been cast in a dreadful light for ages. Watch the movie "Reefer Madness" (or the play, which is better) which satirizes how newspaper owner William Randolph Hurst used America's racism and fear to attack the use of marijuana and lead people to misunderstand it to this day.

Because it's all about goverment control over the people...make people think that Marijuana is bad then they won't want it to be legalized. If it were legalized or ever legalized for medical use, then the goverment would lose tons of money they get from capturing drug dealers. When they make a big bust, the local and state governments get money from the federal government. The money and property of the drug dealer then becomes up for grabs.

There are two sides to any coin but it's still part of the same coin. For myself yes it was my first drug and yes it opened the door to others. One or the first things I thought was they should legalize it,this stuff isn't bad, what happened is I crossed the line,between right and wrong, legal and illegal not taking the advice of people that knew a heck of alot more than I did. By your question I see you have that information that came from people who know that it is. On that other side of the coin I do know a few, very few that has stayed just smoking. okay for me i have family memeber who are addicted to Pot. and it was the first drugg of his and his friends uses before they went on acid and crack and hard stuff.

also im alergic to pot and will die if exposed to it.

the company it keeps. so all you do is smoke weed. I bet you know where or who you can get some :crack, crank, meth, heroin, uppers, downers, ludes, .... and they all smoke pot.

It may not have led to anything more for you, and for that you are very fortunate. It can and does lead to many more terrible things for a lot of other people. It's very sad, and that is why it's illegal.

This may freak some of you out but what the heck! Yes, I do see marijuana as a 'gateway' drug but , a little differently than you might expect.

For cancer sufferers it is a gateway to pain relief, and also acts as an anti-emetic.........keeps you from vomiting after you eat, and it also is a gateway for many with no appetite, due to chemo or radiation, it's a gateway out of the hell of nausea.

For people with incredible pain in their eyes from Glaucoma it is a gateway to almost instant relief from the pressure that makes your eyes feel like they will burst forth from the sockets.

So for every person who has negative input on this question I think you should have to stand in someone else's shoes for a day and see how many other gateways you could think of then.

Marijuana has a reputation of being a harmless drug. This is supported by the huge amount of information agreeing with that on the internet. So when drug dealers what to get people on meth or cocain, they bring along marijuana. Since it is supposively harmless, they use that to get people to try harsher drugs.

That is what is meant by a gateway drug.

i have never experience the so called peer pressure associated with being around smokers
no ones tried to get me high before, sure theyve offered but never pushed, its just "hey wanna smoke" i say no he says" alright more for me" and thats the end of it

as for the gateway drug thing
that only happens to idiots who hang with dealers who tell them hey try this new drug its better than pot so they go "eeeeeerrrrrrrr okk"

if you smoke itheavily for a long time bad things will happen to you

although in your case (recreational smoker) than your problems from it will be minimal at best

I'm not a crazy junkie and I've been smoking dope (the english for pot.. we put our plants in the pot)... Actually the thing is, many heroin addicts also live totally normal lives, getting married and raising kids etc.
As you know dope is the excuse losers use for getting onto other drugs. It's not the dope it's the dope using the stuff.. So he/she is standing in court and their sad mitigation is "I started on dope and then had no choice to get onto the harder stuff."

It's the same thing with the myth that dope is addictive.. In court some poor loser's mitigation was "I couldn't help it as I was addicted"....

So dope / pot / marijuana gets this bad name.. You probably do more damge to your brain when you fart.. seriously!!

Why get busted? It's easy man.. How many dope smokers/growers have gangs of hit men and guns?
We're too mellow and we're in it for the buzz not the cash.
So.. an easy hit for the law.

I believe someone can use marijuana recreational, and others aren't able to and move on to other things.

A sublingual spray derived from an extract of cannabis has also been approved for treatment of multiple sclerosis in Canada as the prescription drug Sativex - this drug may now be legally imported into the United Kingdom and Spain on prescription.
After you have all this information, do you still think marijuana should be used as recreational ?
People whom are under certains treatments as Aids and Cancer for example (just one of many examples) are requiered to prevent of engaging on certains activities such as driving, because the sides effects of the medication can jeopardize their ability to drive.
Do you think there is no problem of people smoking some pot just for fun and driving even with their motor's sense on danger and become responsable for some accident? I bet you would say: Ok what about alcohol?
If you already have the option to use a "legal drug" such as alcohol why legalaize another one? Fixing a mistake by creating another mistake. Isn't enough the demage the alcohol had brought to our society to have another drug on free circulation too?
I am just trying to help you see things from another point. Take some time and reflect about that, you will come with a resonable answer for your question if you don't think only about your needs but in a general needs. Remember some people are more prone than others to the use of certain drugs, maybe the junkie is more prome than you are, not because he chose to live the way they do or decided not to conrol its drug's use or for many people think because the junkie is weak or lazy..

can be maintained as recreational, but most times it escalates and degenerates the person's quality of life, i 've seen people transfom by it, and ai seen people become criminals for it.

It only becomes a "gateway" drug to those who want to try harder drugs that give you more of a "high" and those harder drugs are very frequently available and offered. I know many people who have tried the harder ones and prefer majiuana above any of them and stick with only majiuana. Unfortunately, it is illegal and therefore a danger to anyone who associates with it.

i don't smoke my sisters, mom, one aunt, and a couple of uncles and cousins do. it's not that weed makes you do other drugs it's that it is usually the first drug you use and then you want some thing harder, you move up. people have designs, they know what they're capable of, you knew you didn't want to smoke crack, shoot heroine, or snort stuff and if you know that, you'll never let anyone convince you that you do. just like me i know i don't want to smoke and so far there is only one person who is steadily trying to convince me that i don't know what i want for myself, needless to say she is no friend of mine.
