Because they are afraid and their fear is too strong for their weak minds. Thay cannot face the consequences of their deed and they run like cowards, run from the place of the accident and from their own minds, hoping to forget but they can't and soon they turn to darkside.
And though it's the easier path it isn't the better one.
REMEMBER. |

There can be many reasons why someone would commit the crime of a "hit and run".
First, they could be breaking the law in another manner, which caused the hit and run. Such as "driving underage" or without a license. Or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If they stayed at the scene of the accident and the police showed up, they would be in even more trouble.
Some could be on probation or have their licenses suspended because of previous traffic infractions.
Insurance. It's something we all should have because it's against the law to drive without it. However, some people fail to have it and risk getting arrest and/or sued. Others only have minimal coverage and if you run someone over and seriously injure them, your "minimal insurance coverage" may not be enough to pay for their medicals bills, in which case they could sue.
Or it could be out of pure fear.
It's a crime to leave the scene of an accident though, so it would be in their best interest to stay until law enforcement arrives, no matter what the case. |

Because they are afraid of their own actions. They would stay but they know if they stay they will have to pay for the accident. The hit and run is illegal, but if you never get caught, its free. The truth hurts. |

Well let's see now....if they were hired to do a 'hit' than that's obvious and .....if it was an accident and they were acting out of fear by getting the hell out of there that answers that one....What was the question? |

Because the laws are screwed up. If a person, even an adult, just runs out in front of your car, and there is no possible way for you to stop, and you hit them, it is automatically 100% your fault, not theirs for running in front of you. Then that person can sue your life away from you.
(Not saying I think it is OK when someone runs, just saying why some might do it.) |

people hit and run..because they panic... because they are wanted... because they are drunk or under the influence..because they dont want to go to jail. people who hit and run face other charges usually... not just fleeing.. that adds to the penalty. i dont have a way to verify that no one every does ten yrs or even if the max is ten.. but if someone is killed then it is no longer a hit and run... it is vehicular homicide. it could also be negligent or involuntary homicide in some places. |

Because they are irresponsible and don't want to pay the consequences. They either don't want their insurance to go up, or for the most part, they don't have insurance at all (usually illegal immigrant drivers or DUI) would do something like that. |

They probably are in shock, and panic. When they calm down a bit, then they're probably worried about being imprisoned or having their licenses taken away. |

Panic, at such a time the brain shuts down for most people and their first reaction is to run. As I am sure you already know most of them regret it later. So really you just can't blame them for their first reaction. It is Fight or Flight. And in such a situation there is nothing to Fight so Flight is what takes over. |

Because they are already in trouble with the law and don't want to go to jail. Or maybe they are drinking and driving and know they are going to jail. |

Fear plan and simple. well maybe not so simple. A few people do it on purpose but the majority of people it is an accident and they freak out. Fortunately most of them do turn themselves him because when they get their sensses back they realize there is no way out but to fess up. |

Sometimes people do not even realize they hit something or someone. I would imagine this happens to people that are DWI. Some people know they hit something or someone, and don't have insurance, or are DWI, or have outstanding warrants and are just scared and make a very BAD decision to leave the scene. People think just about themselves sometimes, and don't pay attention to how their actions affect other people. |
