Why do people oppose stem cell research?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why do people oppose stem cell research?

don't they realize it can save lives?! Also, the babies are already dead, why just waste them?! I just don't see how the people opposing this could make an impact so big that Bush would screwed up our scientific research on this HUGE breakthrough that might even hold the key to prevent/reverse aging itself. I think they should start with opposing abortion and until that's made illegal, stay the hell out of sciences way!

Most of your answers are completely missing my question,

I'm not talking about killing babies retards, I'm talking about using aborted babies that are already dead, there's a BIG difference, and if you're too stupid to understand that, please don't bother to respond to this question.

People oppose stem cell research because they do not understand it. Just look at the responses. They have no understanding about stem cell research.

The research is done on embryos that will be thrown away. This embryos will be thrown out in other words destroyed. The research will be done on these type of embryos.

That is how the people who oppose stem cell research think. They don't get the real facts about the situation. They assume things.

I don't think anyone opposes stem cell research. Some people are against terminating embryos to get the stem cells. Many Republicans are against government funding for it, because stem cell research is attractive, their are many financiers for investment in the private sector.

The only type of stem cell research that has shown any promise thus far have come from adult stem cells, which don't involve terminating embryos.

why would we stop hundreds of lives before they have a chance to live to help some people live more comfortably?? And now there growing fetuses and using them for the sole purpose of research which is fuked up

and thanks to the idiot known as obama we are paying taxes for this...

You know there's a DIFFERENCE between EMBRYONIC and ADULT stem cells.

.... and virtually all uses of EMBRYONIC stem cells end up with the body REJECTING them as a "foreign entity" just as your immune system rejects germs and viruses.

The HOPE of Embryonic stems sells is being used to MANIPULATE people into supporting test-tube creations of human life and then killing it to harvest cells.

Next to abortion, it's the largest DE-VALUATION of human life in 50 years.

Mike
It is morally reprehensible. Maybe you could grow a set of morals from your stem cell research, but I doubt it... it would be rejected.

growing humans for research, regardless at what stage it is in development is morally and ethically wrong. Once they start down that path it only goes further. Its really weird too, reminds me of the matrix.

I think that there are certain issues that you may be overlooking. I believe that some people will create life in order to terminate it. This means physically making life with test tube babies and then killing/farming in order to get the cells. Makes me kind of squeamish to think of farming human life.
Also, if a person is against abortion and believes it is killing, a statement like "the babies are already dead" might make them think there could be another means.
By the way, Bush only opposed federal funding of this research, he didn't stop it altogether.
It's interesting that the government has to suddenly be into everything, don't you think? There has always been medical research all along but our tax dollars have not been involved.
Do you want the government to take your money and make a decision about what to research and what not to research?
What if you or a member of your family is dying of an illness and it is NOT the ones the government feels is politically correct to fund?
I prefer to donate to the medical research that I want to support, personally. I donate to the American Cancer Society as well as The Leukemia and Lymphoma research and care as I have family who have died from or have these. Why should the government take my money and decide to fund something where I feel the methods are questionable?
Think about it. There are some major misconceptions about this type of research. I think it's great when stem cells are taken from the umbilical cords and placentas and there is no killing of anything involved. I know people who may benefit from stem cell research and hope something is discovered to help them.
But, I do not condone killing babies in order to do this or creating life in order to terminate it.

Because we have learned over the years, that everyone wants more...

"It's just cells from dead babies" becomes" we need more cells than we can harvest this way..."

euthanasia of old people allows them "to go on home, on their terms" becomes "old people have outlived their usefulness...euthanize everyone at 70"

The answer to your question is finding a way to use a patients OWN cells, as stem cells..which is very close to reality...and solves everyones problem...

It's That Guy
I'll tell you what I really think, though it won't be popular, especially with conservatives and Christians.

The Republican Party has always been the minority party in terms of voter registrations. The only way a minority party can take control is by 'exciting' their base. Get them worked up and angry, get them to the polls in bigger numbers. This worked very well for them though the 80s, 90s and 00s, until just recently. If you look at results over the last 50 years or so, you find that the more apathetic the general population is, the smaller the turnout at the polls, the better the Republicans do.

Part of this strategy is to cultivate single-issue constituencies. So they tell gun lovers that the Democrats are going to take away their guns. They tell homophobes that gays are taking over the country. They tell nativists and xenophobes that illegal immigrants are streaming across the border by the millions. These are all Republican groups, people who just care about one single thing, and that determines their vote.

But the biggest single-issue constituency is the Christian Right. Since 1980, the Republicans have trotted out a variety of Christian Right issues. Prayer in school. Abortion. The Ten Commandments in courthouses. They're not actually able to DO very much on any of these issues, so they keep bringing out new ones so people don't notice that they haven't made any progress on the -old- ones!

And that's where stem cell research comes in. It's vaguely related to abortion. Ronald Reagan promised to propose a constitutional amendment (no less!) to declare the pre-born as 'human beings' which would have made abortion illegal. But he never really even tried. I wasn't going to waste his political capital on a losing fight. Because Repbulicans knew from the start that they could never ban abortion, they made it into a whole series of issues, which they tackled one at a time. So called 'partial birth' abortion. Parental consent Handing it down to the states rather than ban it at the federal level. Finally stem cell research. It's just a way to keep the issue alive.

It was a poor choice, perhaps a choice of desperation, because many prominent Republicans have come out in favor of stem cell research. But Republican politicians in the South are afraid to give up on the issue. If any of them admit it might a good idea, he will be immediately jumped on by his competition within the party as a 'baby killer'. So these days they are soft-pedaling, but of course it's still fair game to call Democrats 'baby killers'.

Crazy honest
Stem cells from sources already deceased should not offend anyone. I think that it is wrong to create a life just for the stem cells. I would also like to say that liberals are NOT afraid to die. I am very liberal and I don't belong to any political party. I am not a Christian, but I do believe in a higher power. I do believe that science and religion can have a happy coexistence together. Religion is important to many people, it helps them psychologically deal with life and death.
