The Federal Minimum wage is $5.15/hour. Many states have higher minimum wage laws.
Check out this site from the Dept. of Labor. It has a map that shows which states have higher or the same minimum wage as the Federal minimum wage. It also tells you what the minimum wage is in each state.

Because that is approximately the amount an individual needs to earn in order to make a decent living. |

The Federal Minimum wage is $5.15, but states are free to raise it above that. Maine has, and Michigan is starting a 2 step process that will raise to $7.10 (if I recall the change correctly) by next year. |

The federal minimum wage is $5.15. Each city, not just the state, can set their own labor laws. The city of Santa Monica in California set a $10.50 minimum wage in 2001, while the State of Californa set the wage at $6.75 a few weeks later. It depends on the prevailing law, as to which is the minimum wage that you are subject to... BUT, there are exceptions that allow for lower wages, especially for waitpersons who are expected to make up the difference in tips. |

Federal minimum wage is $5.15 an hour. However, some states follow their own rules.
Alabama, Arizona and Louisiana, for instance, have no minimum wage laws.
D.C. mandates $7.00 an hour.
Kansas, in a stroke of nostalgia, has a $2.65 minimum wage.
The minimum wage is $6.75 in Massachusetts and New York |

minimum wage varies from state to state so it's not a matter of people think it is, for the simple fact that it is here in Wisconsin it might not be where you are at |

Minimum wage is different in different states. The US mandates at least $5.15/hr., but California mandates $6.75.
Lest you think that you're getting screwed by being in a "cheap state" with lower minimum wage, remember that a higher wage means that employers will expect more from you, and will be less willing to hire...
A higher minimum wage is also racist - hurting lower educated minority populations, in favor of better educated people who are more adept at technology. |

The federal minimum wage for covered, nonexempt employees is $5.15 per hour. Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages.
For example, the basic minimum wage in California is $6.75. |
