First off I just want to say that Second Hand Smoking is not linked to any kind of health risks. If anyone did a little research on the topic they would find out that the studies that the EPA did in the early 90s suggested no links. They fudged the numbers and the methods to make it look like there was a link.
True smoking is linked to hazards, but so is drinking, eating too much, and just about every other thing that humans do in a daily life. Hell, driving is hazardous, do you think we should outlaw that as well? It is my god-given right to do whatever the hell I want with my body as long as I don't put others in danger, and if you look at the links below you will see second hand smoke is not proven to be dangerous.
They reason people want to outlaw smoking, is because everyone today is totally ignorant to the facts. They believe what they are told, and they are told that second hand smoking is dangerous. People today want to be politically correct all the time. Just because you don't like what I am doing doesn't give you the right to make me stop. Thats like telling someone to stop eating meat, because they are a veggitarian. What is this world coming to???
Oh by the way, I have never smoked a day in my life. I can't stand it, but I'm not going to take away somebody's rights just because I don't like it. I'll just enjoy myself somewhere else. |

Because secondhand smoke affects others who choose not to smoke. Someone who is near a smoker could possibly recieve health risks from something that you are doing. Someone sitting beside someone drinking is not affected.
Outlawing it would not work. People would just do it illegally. Besides that, governments would be losing lots of tax revenue, so i don't see it happening anyway.
I personally think the current trend of just banning it in public places is a decent solution.
However, a stronger argument for banning it altogether is children. I agree with the argument that whatever you do in the privacy of your own home is your business...but parents smoke around their children, and the children really have no choice in the matter. I think this is wrong.
Anyway, I used to be on the "make smoking illegal" bandwagon...but I realize that it probably would not work. I just wish people were smart enough to not do it in the first place.
Anyone who smokes is suffering from a bad case of denial. |

Because it is more harmful to the human body than alcohol. It also disturb other nonsmokers. I think it should be banned forever. |

What should be outlawed are the tobacco giants that make the products that irritate the non-smokers so much. People always down talk smokers, but in the end, it is like any other addiction. People may want to quit, but it may physically be the hardest thing they have ever had to do.
People should lobby to stop the production and sales of cigarettes altogether, not smoking.
Of course, that will never happen as there is so much corporate favoritism in this country. |

alcohol is fine because you choose if you whant to drink or not its up to you.
smoking how ever affects any one withing the distance of the smoker not just the smoker i dont think it should be illigal but i olso dont think that if a kid gets cancer because his or her parents are chain smokers and have to put up with it. that person was never given a choice and its not fair. |

Because it infringes on the rights of those who choose not to smoke. If they have to inhale someone elses smoke in public they get thier panties in a bunch. Besides, science has proven for the past 50 years that it's bad for you. |

because its a lot easier to attack smokers than the millions of other things that are far more dangerous to our health...
such as car exhaust. no one wants to ban cars, so we will attack smokers instead.
heres a question for all:
Would you rather be trapped in a closed room with a bunch of smokers or with a running car?
those of you who chose "car" will be dead LONG before those that chose "smokers".
carbon monoxide will kill you in a couple hours, and we spend almost every day sitting in traffic, filling our lungs with it.
are smokers really the ones endangering your health? |

I think a lot of the smoking restrictions were implemented by people with health concerns in the workplace, for example people in the food service industry were being exposed to second hand smoke and statistics were proving that their exposure was making them ill.
Other than that, I think it is a courtesy to people bothered by smoke.
There are laws restricting the purchase of tobacco products due to the health effects. Studies have shown that smoking has detrimental effects on the growth process and the health of children and teenagers.
I don't think it's like prohibition and alcohol. People are still able to purchase and use cigarettes, but they might have to put in a little more effort than just lighting up anywhere. |

because some people like controlling others. there is not enough true evidence about the effects os secondhand smoke. i think it should be up to the business owner. i don't smoke but support the right to smoke. everyone has the right to do anything they want that doesn't directly affect other people. |
