Why do so many people criticize pot when alcohol is America's real drug problem?

How do you feel? Whats the big deal about smoking pot? Why is drinking yourself "stupid" ok in our society? Will America ever change its stance on Marijuana?

We live in a VERY HYPOCRITICAL society.
Anyone who has smoked pot knows that it is hardly comparable to alcohol. The statistics are out there, and it's to the point where anyone with half a brain can see that marijuana is a relatively harmless drug compared to everything else out there, including alcohol. All the years of propaganda have failed, and we are no longer fooled by their lies.
It all comes down to power and control. The government can not regulate a plant that we can all grow in our backyard and they make too much money on the fraudulent 'war on drugs'. |

i feel the same way they use marijuana as medicane so why cant it be leagal to use? alcohol does worse things to u over all than pot ever would. pot should be legalized. when it isnt it just makes people want it more so when it is legal it wont be used as much b/c people wont see why to do it. |

Marijuana should be completely legal. Not sure why people think smoking pot is so bad.....when alcohol is so much more harmful. Pot needs to be legalized or at the very least, decriminalized. |

Most criticize pot because they have never tried it. So they automatically assume that it is bad. The government hates it because they can't tax it. |

I don't think we will change in the near future, but I agree with you. Alcohol is not thought of as an issue because it can be taxes and controlled. Also, the marijuana question is a political nightmare. |

Many Americans fell whole heartedly for the government propaganda from decades past... when marijuana was first criminalized. Try watching the original "Reefer Madness" propaganda film without laughing yourself silly (while sober!) We will never slow the sales of alcohol (prohibition taught us that). In my opinion alcohol is legal and our number one problem drug wise because it is easily taxed and difficult to produce at home. Anyone with dirt and water could grow pot without taxation.
No drug is good for you...all the way down to caffeine...but I firmly believe that your body is your own and what you put into it is an individuals decision... just don't come whining to me for free health care if you develop a chronic illness related to drug use! |

ACTUALLY...drugs and alcahol practically the SAME thing. they are both harmful to your functioning and your everyday life. and people talk about alcahol the same way they talk about marijuana. i'm going to the ninth grade right now as soon as the summer ends... i bet that they will STILL be teaching us about marijuana and drinking. you may hear them talk more about marijuana on t.v more than they do about drinking because to some people, drinking is a key to good partying and having relaxing time off work and taking their mind away from stress. but not knowing that alcahol can ruin their lives too. |

I agree with you totally. I haven't smoked pot since college (a long time ago lol) but when you smoke you get the munchies, chill out and in a couple of hours you can drive yourself home. When you drink you have to sleep it off. I think that alcohol is way more dangerous and addictive. When I got pregnant with my first son I had no trouble not smoking pot! It was way harder to quit smoking cigarettes! |

Weed is like that because the government cannot legally profit from it. Weed is of the earth and its' use is slowly being minimized but I don't know if it will ever be collectively accepted. Plus, rich people believe if U come 2 a party stoned, you'll eat all their food, but if you're drunk, you can kill yourself on the way home. |

well its because pot is illegal and alcohol isn't (over 21). Pot is also pretty bad for you, brain damage and such, and you can act dangerously under the influence.
but yea i agree with you they're both problems |

I agree.....ever heard of someone killing someone while driving under the influence of weed....uh, not very often. Green's should be legalized. |

I totally agree! If I had my choice of an oncoming driver being high or intoxicated, I'll take high any day! They aren't nearly as impaired and I tend to drive better when under the influence of marijuana.... |

I say legalize everything. If you can afford it and don't infringe on anybody's personal rights, go for it. The problems arise because drugs, including alcohol, are the cause of many other crimes. Domestic violence usually has alcohol involved with it, people rob others or steal for money for drugs, or some people kill over them. If the government would sell it, tax, and regulate it, then people who could afford it and stay out of trouble should be allowed to do it. Just a thought, but the government shouldn't tell anyone what to do with their own bodies. Right women? |

When society recognize the fact that alcohol does destroy numerous lives more ways than one (been there). Alcohol is does kill!
I have encountered many who were ill and numerous expensive medications were prescribed. The downside, are side effects, which usually creates more difficulty for the ill. Yet, physicians are licensed to harm/kill legally!
More terminally ill patients need to defy the government and try HEMP! Then, they themselves can determine whether it is good or bad. |

i think we should not do either but remember that alcohol is made by american people they are able to tax it. where pot the best stuff is not made in america. the alcohol companies are the biggest fighters against the legalization of it. they know that if it is legalized people wil not drink so much they would rather smoke weed. the best weed comes from south america so there for america does not want to open a muli billion dollar market to them. do u know how much money the government makes from tax dollars for their "war on drugs"? |

Drinking and pot should both be discouraged. Both are excesses that drain a person's time, money, and productivity. A user generally uses these to forget of the responsiblities that they are neglecting. People were designed to get through life without this things. Using these drugs as a crutch only weakens character. |

I've pondered this many times but don't fret it. I smoke if I choose and don't if i'm not in the mood. Pretty simple. |

Cos, pot has been shown to have direct links to psychiatric disorders. Also it is probably the cause of far more accidents than drink. There has been several research papers showing links between pot and brain damage.
Smoking is recognised as causing cancer and you smoke pot which adds yet more chemicals to the smoke.
Most drink related problems can be treated to a greater extent whilst the problems caused by pot smoking are usually irreversible.
The people who push pot are criminals and gangsters and people die to make them rich.
Get drunk and you will be sober the next day. Same cannot be said for pot because it stays in the system for four days. Therefore if you smoke every day you are never properly sober! This is such a serious problem that traffic cops all over the world are experimenting with new detection devices with a view to taking all drug takers off the road. |

Interesting question. Alcohol does seem to cause more problems but perhaps thats because it's so much more prevalent...not to mention legal. Alcohol prohibition was tried in the early 1900's but that went badly. Alcohol has a much longer history & is used by many people in a responsible way. Personally I dont know of anyone who would say "drinking yourself stupid is ok" & I imagine a person with this view would have no problem with people smoking pot either. The problem with pot is that it stays in you system much, much longer than alcohol & can therefore have a greater effect on everyday functioning. Causes laziness, etc. |

Pot, alcohol, heroine....all the same stuff. Pot smokers think because they smake a grass that it's ok. It's not. You're still getting stoned. Duh . |

Because pot is illegal.
We criticize when ppl drive drunk etc... also because that too is against the law.
Pot is illegal because, unlike alcohol, when used in moderation causes harm and alters the mind. In layman's terms, one toke off a joint does harm and gets you high whereas one beer has no effect either way. |

well, this is a tricky one. its more about drawing a line in the sand somewhere.
you're going to get answers from pot-heads who think that theres nothing wrong with it (and it is harmful in certain ways), and you're going to get those that say its just as bad as crack (and most of those ppl drink, so they're doing something thats pretty much just as bad).
i think it has a lot to do with the government being able to say "we draw the line here, this is whats legal, and his is whats not". they need to have a line like that somewhere. if pot was legal, you'd get the guys that like mushrooms going "well, why arent mushrooms legal too??". if that was legal, the acid trippers would say "well, thats not right, acid should be legal too...." and it wouldnt ever end.
but honestly, i dont think pot is all that much worse than alcohol. but a lot of ppl classify it as though its heroin or something. i personally dont understand why anyone wants to dull their senses with any drug. its just a personal choice, but i dont do any of it. i dont drink, smoke, do any drugs, hell, i dont even drink coffee (but thats more because it smells bad, and i dont think i'd like it).
so, as an outsider, do i think that pot should be legal, not really. it wouldnt change anything. they'd make an age limit, and a legal amount you can buy, and kids would get someone to buy it for them, and nothing would really be any different. and, i deal with enough stoners on a daily basis as it is (i work at a music store). lol. do i think its really any worse than beer? not really. ppl say that the government wouldnt be able to tax it, but they could if they wanted to. i bet they'd love to make money off of it. but again, its that whole line in the sand idea. at some point, there needs to be a limit.
and i dont really care what someone does, as long as they do it at home and dont go driving around, or going places and bothering others, specifically, dont bother me. lol.
AND, its funny that so many ppl say they drive better when high, this is the funniest thing in the world to me. people williingly take a substance for the sole reaosn of it messing with their perspection of things, and they know it changes their response time and reactionary judgment, then say, "i drive better on weed!". no, you do not. you just THINK you do, because you're high. next time you're getting high, just do this. set up a camera and tape what you do for however long you're high. then, the day after, write down what you did, and talked about while high. then, watch the tape and compare notes. i know a group of college kids that did this, and they said that they were only about 30% correct as far as what they did VS. what they thought they did. a lot of them played games and thought they did really well, but actually could barely function. and some of them remembered beating their friends at video games, but their friends didnt even play them, or they actually lost most of the matches. |

It's not ok...the problem is we've already tried to forbid alcohol during the prohibition era....and what happened, bootleggers and smugglers. I don't America will change it's stance on marijuana because if we did, then we would have to change our stance on crack and heroin and other drugs.... |
