Why don't we cane criminals rather than fining them?

im afraid it isn't allowed anymore because it is"wrong" but it is a great idea it will put people off a whole lot more than a fine which may never et paid, we can even make a punishment day where once a month you can see the guilty being punnished, but unfortuneatly this will never happen cause it is not "civilised" damn people on there moral high horses

Absolutely with you. I think that the punishment should fit the crime. I just read a story about a 15 year old hoodie that chucked a rescue kitten that had been adopted by the crew of the HMS Belfast into the Thames and left it to drown.

I suggest that the same be done to him/her....I'd personally pay money to the treasury just to watch that. So there would be an additional public benefit.

Its about time that victims of crime in this country truly felt that Justice had been done !

Caning is too gentle. Criminals should be used for testing pharmaceuticals and cosmetics on instead of using innocent animals

I agree, stop entertaining them and work them until they are to tired to cause problems. I'm all for chain gangs, and guards armed with high powered rifles to watch them!

We should cane criminals who commit crime. Pain is definitely the best deterrent. Our government don't agree but i think they would think twice before committing another crime again.

If they committed rape or murder; they should be stripped naked, tied to a singapore style trestle and bent over with their buttocks bared. Then they should be thrashed with a rattan cane like they do in singapore. at least 30 strokes for this sort of crime. Their buttocks will be bleeding profusely but it serves them right. They won't do it again.

You have definitely got my vote. There are so many times I have heard on the news that another person or persons received a slap on the wrist. It already seems that the laws we have here right now are not working. Also maybe the victims of the crime should be the ones to cane the criminals. I am all for it.

its not moral. i would rather be caned than pay 500 bucks for being stupid and spending one night in jail... where the hell am i going to get 500 bucks?

That's not the American way.
It's the Southern way and you know the grief we get for it.

Also with a Justice system more concerned with arrests over them being actually guilty(to do otherwise makes you "soft on crime"), it's hard to fully back the effective deterrents. DNA tests have shown how Many innocent people were convicted over the years, makes the public cautious. I do believe you have a point though.

Alex S: Don't you believe the electric chair to be the definition of cruel and unusual. Yet it was in answer to be-headings, firing-squads and such. Also during the time of the constitution, was it not permissible to beat your wife with a thin stick? So what would that say about the rights of a guilty individual?

So. Seven people have answered this so far and not one of them has enough basic knowledge of civics to know that any answer to this question must refer to the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America? What is this world coming to?!! Did you learn nothing in high school? Don't you know that our Bill of Rights is what sets us apart from totalitarian governments?

The Eighth Amendment provides: "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

Caning in our society is considered to be a cruel and unusual punishment. If you're not familiar with it, it leaves scars at a minimum and can leave people crippled for life.

If you don't value the Bill of Rights, if you wouldn't stand up for the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, then go live somewhere that has similar values. Russia, China, Korea, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Burma. Those are some of the countries that live by the values you pro-caning people espouse. Maybe you'd be happier living there.

You're D right I'm judgmental about this kind of ignorance. There's no excuse for it. If an American doesn't know the basic tenets of the U.S. Constitution, he should be ashamed. If you don't know, you've got your weekend reading cut out for you. No excuses. Google it. If you can't bother to learn the entire thing, at least figure out what's in the Bill of Rights. (That's the first 14 Amendments.)
