While there are many atleast partially correct answers here, the real answer is one that is going to be beyond any answer possible here.
However, one other major factor in both rates is the decreasing value of the punishment received for either act. Look back through time at the punishments for different crimes, as well as for divorce.
Ages ago, someone who was caught stealing could have their hand cut off. Someone who was caught being adulterous would be killed. Divorce just didnt happen as it would shame the family.
Moving forward, people were sent to awful prisons for excessive time for stealing. Adultery/divorce while still shaming the family resulted more in the ex-wife being shunned, and needing to start new where no one knew her.
Moving to recently, theft was punished by time in jail. The jails are much nicer, and times have been decreased. Adultery/Divorce became less of an issue because society started caring less about their neighbors and more about themselves and those they cared about only. The shame was kept to a small circle of people.
Moving to today, jail times are short, if even existant for theft and other crimes. Divorce is commonplace, and seen as a strength thing for the woman to be able to leave a bad situation (Im not condemning it, just saying.) When people do go to jail, they may be in a better situation than they were at home or in the streets. Jails have gotten to a state of almost being kushy.
So in the end, a more complete answer than just, its gone up, or its the parents fault, or any other myriad of answers, a major part of the issue is that the risk vs reward is small enough now that commiting a crime puts no fear in to many people as they believe they will get away with it, and even if they dont, the punishments are not that bad. |

Honestly? This country was founded by Christian men who followed Christian morals. Look around you! How many people do you see being kind?...now I'm not talking about donating thousands of dollars to some cherity or giving your entire lifes savings to a guy on the side of the road. But small stuff like holding the door open, or helping someone carry their groceries to the car with out stealing from them. I mean, gracious! When New Orleans was hit by Katrina, there were people grabbing girls off the flooded streets and raping them! Or breaking into buildings because the owner had fled the state or was killed in the storm... Now does that sound like a Nation following God? I don't think so.
If we could get God put back in schools, then we could start teaching kids good morals again. Instead of just teaching them about wars and killing people and how the earth was created because of a "big bang" we could teach them about the love of God and how we should forgive others no matter what they do to us or how many times they hurt us. We can teach them that God created the earth for our pleasure, and by hurting it, we're hurting our selves and our children. If people would just stop being so self-centered and learn to help eachother, then the world would be alot better of a place! We still have a chance to save this world for our children. If things don't change soon... then crime will rule the government. |

Divorce started climbing when free love & abortion became acceptable and commonplace.
Crime started climbing when disrespect and apathy became the norm and commonplace.
Both rooted in selfish and selfserving attitudes of entitlement without consequences.

Actually, it is something that goes in cycles, just like economics. A lot of people blame the party in power, but the fact is, crime and economis go in cycles and it does not matter who is in power. |

I don't know that the two are connected, but the crime rate is up because parents are not doing their jobs. I see 12 and 13 year olds spittting and generally being abusive to the elderly everyday. These kids think it's ok to steal because the store has so much and they don't. The work ethic is gone and I don't know if it's coming back. |

Cuz if you have money, you can kill someone and only be in jail for like 20 years or less if your behavior is good. Crime rate cuz people want attention and some think that they can get away with it. |

You make it sound like they are somehow connected. They aren't. It's like saying "Why has the price of oranges and gasoline gone up?"
The answer is simple. More people are getting a divorce, and more crimes are being committed. |
