Because some idiots in the government called it a gateway drug. I've never tried it and never will, but I think its silly for it to be illegal. If this country was so free why cant people do things that they are obviously stupid enough to do and not get banished from society for it?

Well I'll take a bong hit and answer you as this is something I know a LOT about.

Now then, why is (not only the drug) "Marijuana" illegal (but the entire Hemp plant family as well)?
Simple, Money!
To discover the financial trail leading the the Marihuana Tax Stamp act of 1937, you must go back to the beginning of Prohibition of Alcohol in 1920. Oh sure, the "Church Ladies" were the figure heads but where did they get their backing? The Oil industry. Why? Because people discovered they didn't need gasoline to run their cars! Some good old pure grain alcohol (190 proof) burns just fine in a gasoline engine. The oil industry stood too loose million (Trillions by todays standards). So, they knew they would never have a problem getting all the booze they wanted so. . .
Move to the 1930's. Hemp oil has been used for centuries as a fuel for lighting/lamps and other uses. The rest of the plant when into the production of rope and materials like cloth and paper. See where this is going? The Marihuana Tax stamps were never to be issued. effectively outlawing the plant and it's many bi-products. There was no worries about the needs for rope because there was plenty of hemp rope to be bought from the Asian countries. Until WW2 when the supply was cut off, then stamps were issued to a small group of farms in Wisconsin to grow Hemp for the war. (This is true, state might be wrong but close.)
Fast forward to 1970. President Richard M. Nixon creates the "Shafer Commission" too do a study on Marihuana and file a report. After 30 years, this report was made Public. Nixon was Furious at the groups findings. It is titled; "Marihuana: A Signal of Misunderstanding,"

(short version) The report calls for the legalization of Hemp and all it's by products as it is Harmless.

So the answer is Money, nothing else. And all these people who say no tax's will be made becasue people can grow it themselves.

it is illegal because the government cant tax it.if someone is this country is making money the government feels that they deserve a piece.they are taxing it in CA.it is also legal there(for medicinal use only) but all you need is $150 and a fake injury and you got yourself a "presciption"

It is funny. Probably because the government doesn't want to get rid of the deep rooted negative thought about weed. One reason is how will people who were thrown in jail for possession react? It would make the government look really bad if they reversed the law. Also, smoking anything is bad for you so keeping one less drug out of the reach of people is kind of a good idea.

But look at prohibition. People were prosecuted for having alcohol during that time and then it became legal again. I would be curious as to what I could find about the reaction of the people at that time.

i like your thoughts on this topic,very intelligent you are,truth is because anyone can grow it,so the fact that people dont rely on the government to supply it,it gives them no control over it making it so they cant make profit,and these days making money is the most important thing(for some people).plus,why would you want one more harmful thing for your body to be open to everyone?i dunno

really? so no one ever has died from marijuana? yes iam sure they have not from taking it but probably buying it or something like that

but its a gateway drugs thats why. because people will try smoking that and then they will smoke other things

and your probably saying that alcohol and cigs are gateway but alcohol will just lead you to drink other drinks unlike weed were it might lead you to smoke illegal things
