Because of William Randolph Hearst (as in Patty and the Symbionese Liberation army and Hearst Castle) who owned enough timber to support the entire country and used his money (also known as "influence") to have hemp banned which was touted as a cheaper replacement for timber for paper making. However, not to worry, Osama owns the drug traffic now and is willing to have the US become drugridden as an easier way to destroy it. |

It is illegal since if its legal ... then a lot of people might be dying from overdose on it. So why would we want to risk lives? right? |
|

free your inner blond!

It is illegal because the government (for some reason or another) cannot tax it. they are mad that they cant make money off of it and decide to make it illegal. i actually think alcohol and cigarettes are way worse but those are (almost kind of sort of) legal (4 those who r of age) |

I think it is hypocrisy personally- not that I think it should be legal, but if alcohol is- seems silly for marijuana to be.
I think it is illegal because it is too easy for people to grow and the only way the govt can make money on it, is to make it illegal and pose penalties worse than murderers recieve in some cases. Definitely worse than pedophiles and rapists get!
The philosophy behind criminalizing marijuana is troubling because pot heads usually only hurt themselves- in comparison to alcohol and other drugs- marijuana is like Pez. |

Half of you people don't even know what your talking about. Your only information comes from what you hear from others or what "daddy" said. Do your own research before you post some of these answers. A few of you were correct though," because it's difficult to tax". And all that talk about, " it's bad for you" and "mind altering drug"- it's really a relaxer and it hightens your senses. And the abuse of "anything" can lead to a negative outcome. I tell you what, the worse mind-altering drug is - POVERTY.
(p.s. there are Budweiser commercials right after the commercial that says, "marijuana is bad". you make the call.) |

It's a mind altering drug. Duh! |

Just like tobacco and alcohol it has nasty short and long term affects. Unlike those two, marijauana is not socially acceptable, and thereby we can at least try to keep it out. |

For most of human history, marijuana has been completely legal. It's not a recently discovered plant, nor is it a long-standing law. Marijuana has been illegal for less than 1% of the time that it's been in use. Its known uses go back further than 7,000 B.C. and it was legal as recently as when Ronald Reagan was a boy.
Strange things happen in America. The American cotton industry was one of the major factors in getting marijuana/hemp banned. Most of history cotton was a twine only for wealthy people. Most of them would not have been able to afford a garment made completely of cotton. |

I have no idea. In my opinion, alcohol and marijuana should have the same legal restrictions. Now keep in mind that I don't drink or do drugs, but this is my honest opinion. |

Because it is an additive drug. Unmonitored use of this type of drug could cause a person to harm himself or someone else. It causes ones mind to disintegrate and hallucinate even blink out etc.. This, if driving, cooking, swimming etc.. could cause a lot of damage "you get the picture, don't you? |

Marijuana was effectively banned by the Federal Government in 1934 by the Marijuana Tax Act. Later, when drugs were categorized according to thier potential for medicinal purposes versus their potential for abuse, marijuana was placed on Schedule 1. This means that marijuana has NO medicinal uses and is highly likely to be abused. This is, of course, and outright lie.
The American Medical Association has been lobbying since 1934 for marijuana to be allowed for medical use, and today most Americans aknowledge that it does, in fact, have legitimate medicinal purposes.
Marijuana remains illeagal mainly because any politican who introduces or votes in favour of a bill to legalize would be commiting political suicide. The voting public in America is made up mainly of middle-class families who would be highly unlikely to vote for a cantidate who becks the legalization of a substance that is already used by as many as 70% of American high school students.
Also, a cantidate running against an incumbant who has supported the legalization of marijuana would be able to use that stance to paint his opponant as being "soft on crime" of "in favour" of legalizing drugs in general. No politician could survive such a campaign. |

Okay, I can tell you, as a former highly functional pothead, that it is NOT illegal because you will hurt yourself while driving, cooking, and that other BS that someone else mentioned. It is also NOT addictive. It may be mentally addictive, such as really wanting to get high because, well, honestly, it makes everything more fun, but then again, aren't things like video games also mentally addictive? Sure, it kills brain cells. It is SO much safer than alcohol...no one has EVER died from weed. Never. And if you say because of a car accident, then that person was probably f?cked up on something else. THC (the active ingredient in pot, what "gets you high")can be found in your system for up to months after smoking/eating/etc it. It's next to impossible to accurately test to see if someone is "under the influence" of weed while driving.
Now, to the topic of it being illegal:
"Many people assume that marijuana was made illegal through some kind of process involving scientific, medical, and government hearings; that it was to protect the citizens from what was determined to be a dangerous drug.
The actual story shows a much different picture. Those who voted on the legal fate of this plant never had the facts, but were dependent on information supplied by those who had a specific agenda to deceive lawmakers. You'll see below that the very first federal vote to prohibit marijuana was based entirely on a documented lie on the floor of the Senate."
Taken from http://blogs.salon.com/0002762/stories/2003/12/22/whyIsMarijuanaIllegal.html. I suggest reading the whole article. |

Marijauna is illegal because the government couldn't make any money off of it if it was legalized. They make fat cash off of it now with the way it's sold on the streets. |
