Why is marijuana illegal when tobacco and alcohol are not?
|
OR why isn't marijuana legal if tobacco and alcohol are?
I've drank alcohol and I used to smoke pot on a regular basis, and truthfully I don't understand why they don't either make marajuana legal (considering many of it's scientific benefits) or make alcohol/tobacco illegal (since they have no benifits at all, an can only make you sick). At least marijuana can do some good for some people, and it's not addictive like alcohol or tobacco..

I can answer this, the truth of the matter is that it is a conspiracy. The government knows for a fact Delta 9 (THC) is not a sever mind altering substance. the fact of the matter is, is that the hemp of the marijuana plant is a very valuable substance to the public. It could possibly put many cotton growers out of Business from the clothes hemp can make. government sponsored newspaper company's may have much competition from the paper it can more easily produce. don't forget, see not everyone knows how to brew alcohol and there aren't many places to grow tobacco. but marijuana with practice can be grown virtually everywhere. essentially marijuana can take taxes from the government and it is easier in the long run to fight it with millions of dollars a year than loosing maybe hundreds of millions of dollars a year. |

Tobacco and Alcohol are multi-billion dollar industries with lobbyist. Pot has no lobbyists therefore politicians have no bribes to legalize the pot. It's as old as politics. |

Please get away from banning things that humans consume. Sure tobacco and alcohol cause huge problems, but dammit, I want to be able to smoke my cigars and have a few drinks after work.
As far as marijuana, the reason it is not legal is several reasons.
The prison lobby that has a vested interest to keep our prison system growing.
The tobacco and alcohol industry that has a vested interest to keep illicit drugs off the market. However, both of those industries, back in the early 80's anticipated legalization and were experimenting with marketing schemes, such as a short lived cigarette called Acapulco Gold.
There are other reasons, such as the cotton growers and oil industry. Hemp is very cheap to grow and does not need pesticides since it has its own natural defenses. Hemp makes great cloth and can be used as a cheap bio fuel. Cotton, on the other hand uses about 50% of our pesticides, thus it brings into play the chemical industry.
Look at the drug war in Mexico, so many deaths in recent months all because of the illegal nature of drugs causes growth in organized crime. We should have realized that under prohibition --- it is a no win situation, but the government drug czars would have us think differently.
I could go on and on about the benefits that far outweigh the problems associated with legalization, but I think you will see my point.
Peace

One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today is because cotton growers in the '30s lobbied against hemp farmers (they saw it as competition). This isn't the ONLY reason tho. |

Great question. There's a more sinister reason behind it besides "drugs or bad." Decades ago, tobacco companies saw marijuana as a threat because it would compete with there nicotine cigarettes. The plant that marijuana comes from can also be used to make other products and so these companies worked together to make it illegal and stigmatize it.
You can read about it more in the link below. There are other reasons than what I stated. The site is not exactly a research paper, but the information will make sense. |

This question Keeps coming up and the answer always is Taxes and how to get them. It was an issue with alcohol and tobacco, but they had to create the ATF to make it happen the problem is that Pot is a weed and will grow in a rock. That is always the answer that wins. There is more money for government in fines and confiscation. |

Harry Anslinger started the anti marijuana movement in the 30s and did a hell of a job demonizing it and making the American culture think it was a lot worse than it really was. I think society is finally starting to understand now that there really is nothing wrong with marijuana and it may even be beneficial on a medicinal and economic level. |

Marijuana can't be taxed easily. Marijuana used to be legal, it grew openly in fields as far as the eye could see. Marijuana was the poor person's drug, eh, no bother. It became illegal when rich people instead of going to the doctor paying for their dope, started using marijuana. In the old days the rich suffering from the "vapors," would see the doctor who would perscribed heroine and opium for a price. Marijuana being a "weed," is easy to grow, hard to kill. Anyone could do, hence it was outlawed. Not my opion, fact, actual history, just Google it. Life isn't fair, what can you do. |

they know it's too late to make those two illegal, and also, they'll make a lot more money from them than from marajuana . |

Beacuse the best marijuana isnt grown here! SO the U.S. government cant make a profit unless they make it illegal and bust people with it!! A long time ago marijuana was illegal until what i just stated above and even if it was legal everyone and their mother would have some! Everyone can make a profit and never worry about getting anymore! ♥ |

Well, I'll say this, I don't see any positive benefits from legalizing it. I understand that there are worst things that could be banned, but I don't see that as being a reason to legalize it.
There probably will be a lot more pot heads around if legalized. Doesn't seem like too great of a thing. And honestly, do you think people will be smoking for its "beneftis" or for recreational uses? |

You know the answer already.
The government can't control it.
It's a LONG and HARD process to make tobacco smokable, and it's a similarly hard process to make your own alcohol (but not as hard as tobacco).
Anyone who has soil, a pot, and some flourescent lights can grow pot, let it dry out after being picked, and sell it.
It's too easy to do-it-yourself.
Therefore, even if the government did one day legally sell marijuana, you could buy a batch, take the seeds, go home, and have your own stash forever, (saving the seeds, of course). |

Marijuana is much more likely to cause health problems like cancer than tobacco.
It IS dangerous, but the real reason is money - the government can't tax what you can grow in the garden. |
