There are many responses to this. So far I haven't seen the truth. It is illegal because the tobacco industry and the alcohol industry lobbied against it so that it would be. So did the cotton industry. Their fear (correctly) was: "Why would anyone pay so much money for cigs and beer when they could grow their own pot for free?" Since the plant can also be used for clothing and rope etc, the cotton industry leaders got on the band wagon too. The fact of the matter is that if pot were legal it would take a huge piece of the pie from tobacco and alcohol (and cotton).
When the government considered their share of taxed revenue from alcohol and cigs (and the fact that there would be little from pot) it was a done deal.
I cannot believe how naive people are who wrote because it is bad for you. Does anyone really believe that the government cares if it is bad for the individuals? Seriously, if that were the case why is it legal to do shots of Jack Daniels and smoke a pack or two a day? Get real!
By the way there is considerable research that supports its valid claim for medicinal purposes. But you can imagine how the pharmaceutical industry responds to that. |

America is not ready for potheads to RULE THE WORLD!!! LOL... just kidding!!! Seriously I have always asked myself the same question, I mean I do not agree with people driving will under the influence of ANYTHING!! But I mean if you would want to do it in the privacy of your home, than you should be able to! But that's just my opinion!!! |

Because the Republicans started the bogus war on drugs which turned out to be a waron constitutional rights and THEY think its naughty
10 Times more ethanol can be produced using HEMP (marijuana) than Corn !!!
Farming 6% of the continental U.S. acreage with biomass crops would provide all of America's energy needs. 1
Hemp is Earth's number-one biomass resource; it is capable of producing 10 tons per acre in four months. 1
Biomass can be converted to methane, methanol, or gasoline at a cost comparable to petroleum, and hemp is much better for the environment. Pyrolysis (charcoalizing), or biochemical composting are two methods of turning hemp into fuel.2
Hemp can produce 10 times more methanol than corn.
Hemp fuel burns clean. Petroleum causes acid rain due to sulfur pollution.
The use of hemp fuel does not contribute to global warming.
Deaths from marijuana use: 0
From 1842 through the 1880s, extremely strong marijuana (then known as cannabis extractums), hashish extracts, tinctures, and elixirs were routinely the second and third most-used medicines in America for humans (from birth through old age). These extracts were also used in veterinary medicine until the 1920s and longer. 2
For at least 3,000 years prior to 1842 widely varying marijuana extracts (bud, leaves, roots, etc.) were the most commonly used real medicines in the world for the majority of mankind's illnesses. 2
The U.S. Pharmacopoeia indicated cannabis should be used for treating such ailments as fatigue, fits of coughing, rheumatism, asthma, delirium tremens, migraine headaches, and the cramps and depressions associated with menstruation. 3
In this century, cannabis research has demonstrated therapeutic value and complete safety in the treatment of many health problems including asthma, glaucoma, nausea, tumors, epilepsy, infection, stress, migraines, anorexia, depression, rheumatism, arthritis, and possibly herpes. 3
Deaths from aspirin (U.S. per year): 180 - 1,000 +
Deaths from legal drugs (U.S. per year) at doses used for prevention, diagnosis, or therapy: 106,000 |

It's illegal for three reasons
.... It poses a health hazzard to those that smoke it
..... It causes short term memory loss
and
......It ..........I can't remember the other one |

i don't understand it either. it impairs you like alcohol, and it damages your respiratory system like cigarettes. |

guanjyn

it's illegal because the government can't tax it because everyone would just grow their own |

So that the government can have another huge bureaucracy to funnel money into and control the people with. It is ridiculous. |

I agree with you. It seems the same as alcohol to me. |

I am in awe as to why its illegal also. Cigarettes and alcohol have more damaging long term effects on one's body that marijuana ever has. LEGALIZE!!! |

What are you, 15?
YES it is definitely addictive.... though I admit it is not as addictive as cocaine and heroine.
Yes it is VERY harmful, and is in fact MORE harmful to the lungs than tobacco, though the numbers are skewed because lung cancer rates related to pot are not tracked as closely as they are for cigarettes.
You have NO IDEA how many pot smokers use on a daily basis or not, so that comment is flat out silly.
You also fail to note the damage done to chromosomes and the FACT that frequent use causes TEMPORARY STERILITY (especially in men) and results in a high rate of 'deformed' chromosomes. |

I beg to differ to your remark 'it has been scientifically proven that it is not a physically addictive or brain damaging drug'. The latest research has proven that regular usage causes schizophrenia. I know people affected in this way. Any brain altering drug carries risks. |

Because you must understand politics and taxes. the gov. can't tax it so it's not legal, but If a big company like Pfizer, wanted to get into marijuana sales. Then the gov. would not only tax it it would be traded on the stock market and the gov. could tax that to. |

Because since its discovery it was categorized as illegal. |

I don't know what you have been reading but none of it is true. Pot rots your brain. Have you ever seen anyone after smoking pot, complete idiots. It has the same effects as cigarettes on your lungs. You can't drive anything while inhaling any, so how is it better than cigarettes. There both the same. People who smoke pot lack a brain and motivation. |
