The age old reason: power-lust. Some people are just abusive of their authority. Not all cops are corrupt though.
I have a very close friend whose a cop and he's the most upright guy you'll ever meet. |

The legal system cannot be corrupt if the people will not tolerate it. |

no matter where you go you are going to find corrupt people. testing and such is becoming much more strict to keep these kinds of people out of positions of authority but sometimes a few still slip through the cracks. while i was in the military i came across several people who took advantage of their position and thought they were untouchable. often the corrupt police officers were picked on when they were young and set out to find a career that would put them in a position of authority so they could feel like they have some sort of revenge to those who damaged their egos. not all police are corrupt though. more often than not a police officer has nothing but the best of intentions and actually wants to help people, not destroy them. rarely does the news advertise the good the police are doing in the community, but rather the media focuses on the bad, or as you call it, the corrupt.
for example: all you hear about the military is the incidences like Abu Ghraib and those marines killing an "innocent civilian." What you dont hear about are the food and toy drives that are held where deployed soldiers get their families to send them candy and canned foods and stuffed animals to hand out to Iraqi children.
you dont hear about how we raise money to purchase school supplies and even stand guard in the entrances of Iraqi schools to guarantee a safe learning environment.
my point is... not all police and legal persons are corrupt... but thats all you are going to hear about if the media has anything to do about it. |

The legal system isn't corrupt in the US. I'd love for you to visit a country with real corruption issues just to compare the two. I had a friend who had to bribe a police officer to stop a robbery in progress in Central America... |

I think some policement forget that the power is with the uniform and not the person and I also think that it is a job with a lot of burnout-where they see people at their worst most of the time. In every profession there are those that abuse the system and those that don't. I'll only go so far to say that I have noticed that cops are a breed all their own and best left alone. I don't think the legal system is corrupt. It just seems to benefit those with $ more than those without. But like everything else in a capitalistic system. . .you pays for what you gets. . . |

I know of at least two reasons.
1. The attorneys are officers of the court, and are in a brotherhood of practitioners. As officers of the court, their first duty is to the court. They are not asked to take an oath, and often don't tell the truth in or out of court, relating to a case!
2. Within the bar association, is a natural pecking order. The loudest argument, most often repeated, wins. How do many of them sleep? |

It only seems corrupt to one who continuously breaks the law and gets caught. |

How many times have you been busted hmmm? Don't answer, I'm sure you don't want to embarass yourself. Wait, wait, wait I got it. You're one of those brain-dead morons that got busted with a little herbage and now you're all sad, pouty and whiney about cops?
Call a travel agent and book a flight to Somalia, Korea, or China and come back to tell me about this so-called police state moron. |

They're deities, don't you forget it.
Low pay my a~~!
Longmont Colorado pays about $50K starting wage for officers with no experience or training beyond an associate degree. That isn't an associate degree in criminal justice, that is any associate degree. This is typical of departments nationwide. |

There are more good honest police officers then there are corrupt police officers. It's a tough job and they put their lives on the line every day. I'm not saying all police officers are wonderful men or women who want to help everyone and are fair all the time, but we shouldn't condemn all police officers for a few idiots who are power hungry and corrupt. |
