Why isn't gov taxing the fast food companies for contributing to obesity?

Why doesn't it tax coffee, chocolate or any of the ill heath contributing causes on the supermarket shelf to a more definitive degree? Why does it continue to single out alcohol and tobacco? Why not legalize/tax marijuana and provide some much needed revenue to help reverse the economic turmoil? Why do I have to suffer as a US citizen that was forced f/ the middle class to poverty because my extensive efforts to find employment defies the odds?

just a little- So are the tobacco and alcohol companies ... you failed to grasp the gist of my concerns.
It's all about the overall health of the collective US community.

Yes, let's tax every part of peoples lives that the government thinks is not good for them. Tax people that don't exercise, then the ones that do, tax them more on their carbon output because you exhale more CO2 when exercise.

Doesn't anyone see how sick this gets? Are we building a utopia or are we building a superior healthy population? I seem to remember other countries in history doing the same thing. Weed out the weaker citizens, tax them more and focus on the supreme specimens of people.

It's all pointless. Alcohol and tobacco especially is brought from the Indians and there is no tax. If they didn't over tax tobacco maybe they would get taxes on the sales in the States. But because the Govt believes people don't smoke as much, they raise the tax because they don't get enough sales tax on tobacco. But because they are not that dumb in the Govt, some don't want to try this with foods. There are still people who make moon shine.

i think the main problem is fast food companies provide revenue, in the form of taxes, its like drink and tobacco. they are hardly likely to get rid of them because they provide any government with a lot of cash. and if you think the government of any country is concerned with the welfare of its citizens, over and above the welfare of itself you are nuts, do you know anyone called ted by the way

to eat their food is the choice of the individual. i dont think that those companies should be punished by the choice of the people. :/ theyre just bussinesses.

Most food is already taxed, just not at the rate that alcohol and tobacco are taxed. Alcohol and tobacco are easy to tax at higher rates because not everyone has to buy it and usually the money is earmarked for education or alcoholism abuse programmes.

Marijuana is not legal because the federal government says its not legal. Any attempt by a state government to legalise marijuana will be trumped by federal laws that make it illegal. Technically speaking though, many states do already tax marijuana. In Kansas, for example, drug dealers are supposed to file a tax return and the tax rate is about 100 percent. The idea is that not only do they get you for sale, but also tax evasion. In Kansas not paying drug tax will get you 5 years in prison, plus they will seize all your assets.
