Because too much of our economy depends on it.
If smoking was illegal, everyone who worked at the cigarette companies would be unemployed. |

It is true that smoking causes cancer. Personally, I think smoking is a stupid habit, and am revolted by the nauseous smell of cigarette smoke. However, a ban on cigarettes would actually have negative consequences for society.
First of all, the government makes a lot of money off of cigarette taxes. This tax revenue pays for many important services and programs. If cigarettes were banned, this revenue would no longer exist and as a result, services and programs would have to be cut, or sales and income tax rates would be increased.
Secondly, a ban on cigarettes would be very difficult to enforce. For example, smoking marijuana is illegal, but it is still very common. The police are unable to stop people from using drugs illegally, so how could they be expected to stop people from smoking?
Finally, think back to how well Prohibition worked in 1920's and 1930's. Instead of stopping people from drinking, it created an underground market for alcohol. Criminal gangs became extremely powerful because of all the money they earned off of bootleg alcohol. The same thing would happen today with cigarettes. People addicted to smoking wouldn't just stop overnight, and they would turn to illegal sources to purchase cigarettes.
The solution is banning smoking in public places. This way, the only people the smokers are hurting are themselves. |

because they tried that with alcohol and people did it in secret, just because something's illegal doesn't mean people aren't gonna do it. |

Why? do you think it should be? There are many more dangerous habits then smoking. Drinking and driving (russian roulette) snorting cocaine, injecting heroin - those are illegal actions - but people do them everyday. Making something illegal doesn't stop people from doing that action or activity. Actually, I think it makes it more pleasurable - just thinking about breaking the law - gets some people giddy with delight. |

It's been around for hundreds of years. Therefore people who have power can't just cut it off altogether without a revolt. Once the people are weened properly, they can outlaw the stuff.
Look back to the prohibition time, you'll see why one can't just outlaw stuff. |

Because it shouldn't be. As long as people get drunk and kill other innocent drivers and pedestrians and get a slap on the wrist, not to mention the booze company never getting in trouble for it, why should smoking be illegal? Cig companies getting sued is a joke. Sue the booze companies for all the deaths on their hands first before you mess with the smokers. |

Because we still have some rights. If our smokers rights are chipped away to nothing then the fast food tax and prohibition will surely be next. I have the right to smoke if I so choose.
Why aren't cars illegal then? They stink up the air much more than my smokes. If smokes become illegal all it will do is create a new black market for them. I wish all you non smokers would find someone else to pick on. |
