Are you crazy, safer then alcohol? Healthier then cigarettes? Weed rots your brain, and your lungs, trust me i've seen it because 90% of people who use it are stupid.

Because the elected officials of this country have deemed that it is illegal. If you want to change the law, vote in people who will change it. Otherwise, it will remain illiegal.

The argument for legalizing marijuana is a good one because MJ has a lot of legitimate medical uses and it ranks with alcohol and cigarettes in terms of its danger to the user. And it is true that the government could regulate it and tax it to generate more revenue. Here's the bad news: If marijuana were legal, the rate of vehicle-related deaths would go way up because people would drive stoned (don't try to tell me it doesn't happen -- I come from a family of cops and have heard too many stories of people getting nailed for driving stoned or causing an accident because they were stoned). That costs the government and insurance companies a lot of money, not to mention the loss of life and personal injury of innocent bystanders. You would also see the rate of work-related injuries go way up because people would try to work while stoned. Again, huge costs to insurance companies and employers. Finally, you have the people who lose their jobs and their homes (and therefore ruin their lives) because getting high becomes more important to them than work or their families. MORE innocent bystanders in the form of spouses and children of a drug addict who threw his/her life away to smoke dope (again, don't try to tell me it doesn't happen -- I know people who have lost it all or never got to the point where they could provide for themselves in the first place, mainly college students who got hooked, never graduated, never got decent jobs, and still ended up spending their money on weed).

It was legal, until a politician came up with the "reefer madness" stuff in the late forties and got the government to get it banned.

I dont do drugs, but I can calll a spade a spade and say the government should be spending their time elsewhere and at least decriminalize it. I've never heard of a pothead mugging someone to get money for a "fix." Not like crack or meth.

Because it was used by Mexicans and some people were saying the Mexican workers were using marijuana to lure pure white women into Mexican submission.

Also, because it can be used to replace certain textiles, so those companies also supported its banning (hemp).

Overall, it was banned due to a "moral panic", which means a lot of people were uninformed about the facts of marijuana (i.e. refeer madness), and thought marijuana was something it isn't.

Because the manufacture and distribution can't be controlled. If the government can't monitor the production they can't tax it.
It's actually a very inexpensive process. Anyone with some dirt and a few seeds can plant their own. There is minimal handling involved to take it from the plant stage to smokeable pot. No real equipment is needed, you can use a food dehydrator if you're in a hurry but it's really not necessary. A patient person just needs to hang the plant cuttings until they dry.
So until the government finds a way to tax dirt (not land, just DIRT), water, air and sunlight pot will probably remain illegal in this country.

For all you prudes who think it's NOT safer than Alcohol or Cigarettes...answer me this. How many people have died from smoking pot vs. alcohol and cigs?

I'll save you the trouble of researching. ZERO people have died from smoking pot. Who knows how many have died drinking and smoking cigs.

How can something with no recorded fatalities be illegal? You people are like sheep. You believe everything the government tells you. The Asker's question is a valid one. Too bad I don't have an answer.

if it was made legal, the government would lose out on the money they collect in fines and tickets from marijuana, its a money making policy

there are a myriad of reasons and none of them have anything to do with THC.

Because of the hemp industry.
It is said that it would be a front for weed growers.
There are a lot of textile products that cam be made from hemp. Things like paper, fabric, lumber, and even cooking oil. All without THC.
The paper industry is deathly afraid of that, and to cheap to invest in it.
In the 1990's the last of the industrialized nations, (Canada and Germany), signed that it is now legal in those countries.
At the same time here, We had a anti hemp industry commercial. IT went something like this..."My daddy works for International Paper, he made this dress, a dress from a tree." I don't know about you, but I've never seen an International Paper clothing garment. I'm sure they make the raw materials, however, I don't think they actually make clothing. Besides, with all the current products,( cotton, wool satin, silk, and hemp), why are we cutting down trees to make clothes?

It is absolutely NOT safer than ciggs....smoking one joint is like smoking six ciggs....there are so many problems with the "legal" drugs we have now, why would we add another one?

I think weed is not legal because of a morale obligation we have in America. There are alot of religious people in America and if it seems bad to god then it must be banned to smoke
