Why should marijuana be illegal, when alcohol is not?

Way back around 1930s a man named Anslinger was the first drug czar of the USA. Dupont and some other coporate hotshots had dealings in oil. Oil is used to make plastic. Back then plastic was high dollar stuff. Using hemp, one could extract cheap hemp oil to use in plastic, cutting out Dupont and his cronies and political hot shots. Hemp was demonized in order to maintain a control of plastics. Hemp was blamed for drug crisis in schools that did not exist at the time and Anslinger led the crusade. He lied through his teeth and his cronies also lied through their teeths. The govt.continues to use propaganda to keep money for the drug war flowing into the economy. Drug war did not exist until the USA caused that crisis. Drug users are innocent victims in a war unfairly waged against them by the US govt. Drug laws are hate crimes against Americans. Drug laws are established upon predjudice and bigotry set in the 1930s. It is the only way white people can wage a race war against minorities is throught the use of the drug war.

Main reason: Marijuana can not be taxed because it can be grown at home..."Moonshine" which is home made whiskey is illegal for the same reason...it can not be taxed...so it is all economics for the government...if the government came up with a way to keep you from growing it and they could sell it to, with the tax, they would...

They already tried to make alcohol illegal with the Prohibition Act in the 1920s. That went horribly because the mafia got involved and people were making alcohol in their bathtubs. Alcoholics are just as bad as pot-heads. Just think of the thousands of people who have been killed by drunk drivers and how many spouses and children are beaten by their drunk spouses and parents.

good question,I DON'T KNOW. in my expierence alcohol is far worse than pot .I never had a blackout on pot,never wrecked a car on pot ,no fights etc

Jbuckeye, NOTHING makes anyone commit murder. Murder is a concious choice. If you kill someone on the influence of Alcohol, it's YOUR fault, not the drinks.

There is no good reason. Honestly, the long term effects of marijuana (I'm sure are not as bad as the long term effects of alcohol). Also, the short term effects (high) result in significantly less illness, deaths etc... IE: less chance of being involved in a car accident, less chance of getting into a fight, less chance of falling off a ladder, etc. Overall, the only downside of marijuana is that it does take away motivation and does cause memory loss, but that is very minute compared to what alcohol does (physical/mental addiction, liver disease, inability to operate machinery/drive, not to mention domestic violence, general violence, hangover, wet brain, etc.). At least marijuana has some medicinal benefits (appetite issues for cancer and AIDS patients, glaucoma assistance), alcohol on the other hand has no medicinal benefits. Additionally, there are several prescription drugs: narcotics, benzodiazapines, etc that are also highly addictive but are sanctioned by the DEA, wheareas marijuana (which isn't as addictive) is illegal. It is all BS. Most on this site will probably disagree, but there is no good reason martijuana is illegal and alcohol is legal

When alcohol is drunk "IN MODERATION", it helps to clear your arteries. But there is no such thing as moderation for marijuana; a single toke harms you.

A majority of society just doesn't know many of them because they don't tell anyone, nor get caught!

I agree with everything you say. You already know that the only reason it is illegal is because the government is selfish and it only comes right down to the money component of it. Uncle Sam wouldn't be able to get his greedy fingers on tax money when people grow their own, now would he?

You are correct, unlike what the "mommy commercials" (as I call them) tell people, alcohol is the true gateway drug.

EDIT: Jbuckeye--where is your sources? I've read studies that proved that marijuana "most likely" does NOT cause violent behavior (opposite of alcohol).

War on drugs is a war we will never win, and just because the word ilegal is on it , is that why its so taboo for most people on yahoo answers, the word ilegal is added to the front of it and people automatically think that its wrong to smoke marijuana, Just because are govenment says so, there are LEGAL drugs out there that get passed by the FDA everyday, that do much more harm then marijuana...heres a random article about canibus , i say random cause u can get info on it everywhere, its clear that marijuana has very minimal long term effects. so whats the big deal , well hey like the educated people here on the subject that just dont take an answer from are govenment saying its ilegal, when it has never killed one human, when alcohol has caused millions of alcohol related deaths,that dosnet make sence to people , u would think by now they would have banned alcohol with all the related deaths in the country (thank god they havent love to drink as well) simply becase are govenment makes awhole lot more money making it ilegal and having D.E.A and so forth. Actually it should be a Rx like in California because it has medical uses. US drug scheduling laws state that a drug should only be schedule 1 if it has no medical value. If you think it doesn't try chemotherapy.

the chemical in BC bud kills the cells in the brain that faciliatate drive. It kills a persons need to achieve. Look around at the people who have been smoking pot for a long time. The are all underachievers. They also tend to be low income or on welfare. Lots of them sell drugs to maintain the smoking lifestyle. So if this is the way you want to end up, I KNOW this because I used to be one. I quit, now I do much better.

Just because something is legal doesn't mean we should legalise everything else which is bad. The reason that alcohol is legal is because it has been legal for a very long time and if you tried banning it there would be major riots. You can stop laws from being passed but it's difficult to go back on laws which have been introduced. I'd rather they didn't legalise it to be honest as there would probably be people driving stoned or having a spliff on their work break and then operating heavy machinery.

There are big practical differences in the possible results of banning a universal hobby like beer drinking that has always been legal, versus making legal a minority illegal hobby like drug taking.
