Why should we support gay marriage?

We should support LOVE.

Because all people deserve to not only to share their lives with the ones that they love, but most importantly, in most cases marriage allows for things like family insurance, tax benefits, it allows for medical decisions by the partner and many other legal and social benefits, that are otherwise denied.

Why do people say it's a threat to marriage and families, anyway? Is any straight person really gonna jump ship just to be with a gay? I doubt it.

It's a right as a citizen, the reasons against it are religious ones.

You could cite the case from the 50's (?) where at least one judge cited the bible and god as a reason why interracial couples shouldn't marry. that definately wouldn't fly today, so why are gay couples getting married an issue?

The key in debates is to define the question in a way that boxes the opponent in.

In this case, you might want to define who "we" are, and what "support" means. It would help to know in advance how the other side is assuming these are defined.

If they are taking the most extreme and hard line position possible short of criminalizing being gay, that's good for you. You can define "we" as the entire federal government, and you can simply point out that there's really nothing in the Constitution that gives the federal government any authority to even have an opinion on the matter.

If they are wise enough to see that it is up to the states to decide, or nimble enough to adapt, then you can question whether or not the state meets the requirements of the USSC of having a "rational basis" to deny these privileges to gay couples.

They will probably be pursuing arguments based on morality. If you can couch yours in terms of the US Constitution, you can totally disarm them. There's nothing in it that supports them, the closest it comes is to possibly allow states to decide whether or not to observe gay marriage, but even that is in doubt under a "rational basis" test. If you do that, you can answer every statement they make with "That's true, but totally irrelevant."

Because, we live in America and we are supposed to have the right to be who we are without being afraid. By not supporting gay marriage, it will not make anyone become straight, they will just go to Canada or somewhere. It isn't fair to say they can't marry who they love. I do think that it is pretty gross, sorry no offense, but I don't treat them any different, and they shouldn't be.

I am a Christian, I believe in the Adam and Eve story, but it also says in the Bible to treat others as we would ourselves, if I were gay, I wouldn't want others to treat me any different, I would want to just live a normal life with whom I love.

We shouldn't, its disgusting and totally weird! But if I was involved in a debate I would argue that the following:
$ they are people, humans like us all.
$ marriage is a sacred bond that should be the choice an ANY two people that are in love
$ marriage helps with legal issues as well, like of owning a home and adopting kids. Once you have a â€œspouseâ€ these processes are much easier.
$ it is the 20th century! We should be open to change and forget about the ancient the laws that condemns gays!

they pay taxes too so that wouldnt be fair to deny them that right, after all it seems like they take it more seriously than we do anyways

I would just say leave them alone with their choice, but obviously this won't help your debate, so I would just say that first and foremost they are individuals with rights as are straight people.
As far as I'm concern our Constitution talks about us as individuals, citizens, not straight vs gays, or whites vs blacks, or women vs men.

I cant think of any reason to support gay marriage! Morals are slowly sinking in this country why add another weight to the ship. Its only small percentage that want to get married. Depending on the Region of the U.S. most wont come out of the closet. Remember majority rules in a democracy. I don't agree with the gay thing but I don't bash them either. Marriage should be held to highest standards only of MAN and WOMEN.

There are no reasons to support gay marriage. It is wrong, simple as that. I can't even believe your school would give you an assignment like that.

First of all ...Gayism 1) can be changed 2) Against the law of nature 3) a cultural influence 4) a psyochological disturbance. I won't support this. The government now supports gays, may be in future it might wave a green flag for drug addicts and rapists as well.
