Why would you need a gun in a civil society?

With the other issues of depending on the government aside, you need one to protect yourself. Regardless of whether the police are there to protect you, if you have a person break into your house in the middle of the night, you may not have time to call the police. Even if you do and they are only five minutes away, you can be killed a hundred times over in five minutes.

You have a right and a duty to defend yourself and your family.

Not according to the Supreme Court. There has been several cases that state the police aren't required to respond. I don't trust anyone else for my safety

Self-defense. In this state we had a couple people attacked by a mountain lion. I was wolf-packed by a couple of guys, I didn't need to pull my sidearm (thankfully) but it got them to back down. In parts of this state it can take upwards of thirty minutes before the sheriff's department can respond, It only takes seconds for a person to bleed out if your corraditic vein is sliced.

Hunting is another reason I provide meat for myself. And then factor in all the deer-car accidents, if the deer is hurt to badly you can put the animal down.

To keep that society civil. But which society are you talking about? I know of no 'civil' societies on this planet.

I believe if you rely on the System to protect you, then what happens when it comes time that the System wants you to do something you don't like? They will force you. it's better for everyone to protect themselves, but with all the laws, that may land you in the click for a stretch...

Incorrectly Political

Well, in a perfect world, that would be the case. But we don't live in a perfect world, and the police can't be everywhere at once. 99% of the time, all police do is respond to a crime once it's already happened. One of the aspects of living in a free society is that everyone has the right to defend themselves how they see fit. Many people feel that they would rather entrust their lives to a gun rather than live solely under the protection of others.

I use mine to hunt with, never shot a person in my life.

I've been told by police officers that its not their job to protect me indivdually, but the public in general. And I personally don't believe we live in a civilized society. I wish we did, but if we take the guns from the citizens only the cops and criminals will have them. And too often its hard to tell which is which. I think you have faith in the way things should be, or the way you were taught. I once did too.

You don't need a gun but if someone plans to attack you and know it is illegal to carry a gun he may not hesitate. I he thinks you may have a gun he may think twice

We do not yet have a civil enough society (in U.S. especially) that is sufficiently safe that the need for self-protection does not take priority.

To protect yourself, not everyone in society is "civil", and also the government is not always incorruptable and can and does end up with corrupt members, politics, and goals.

The right to bear arms was originally enstated to allow people to protect themselves from the government itself... With all the gun control laws of today, we are really helpless if the government wants to "force" us to do anything.

You need a Gun because the dependence on Government is not a good thing it leads to a demise of freedoms. The constitution give rights to bear arms so that the government doesn't become tyrannical. Last I would like to ask you to watch the news and tell me if you still think we live in a civil society.
