Will a DUI 11 years ago stop me from getting an RN?

I am soon starting nursing school, devoting 2 full time years to the schooling and borrowing $50K. However, 11 years ago I received a DUI and a misdemeanor drug possession. I was 21 years old. When I called the state board, they can't give me a definitive answer on whether or not I will be accepted, and of course they won't even look at the application until I am close to graduation. I am terrified to go into this much debt for nothing and am hoping there are some nurses out there who will have some insight, or know of others that were in similar situations. Will it be a waste of my time?

I can't say for sure, of course (especially if your State board can't tell you), but I have a friend who had her nursing license suspended due to drug and alcohol issues. She is in a program that will allow her to be reinstated.
Eleven years is a long time. You might be scrutinized a bit more to make sure any problems you might have had are truly in the past, but it shouldn't be a complete bar to your license, I wouldn't think. |
