Last year's law school application pool was horrendous.
Cornell saw a 52 percent increase in applicants.
20 percent more people took the LSAT than the previous year

While there is an overall increase, part of the reason applications are going up at every school is because applicants are applying to more schools than usual. I don't know many people who applied to under 10 law schools and most of them applied to between 10-20. Law schools give out fee waivers like candy, plus you can qualify for fee waivers based on your income through LSAC. I'm not overly familiar with the application process 5-10 years ago, but I get the impression that most people targeted fewer schools.
The economy is also bad right now, so some people respond by fleeing to graduate programs, including law school. I don't know why going into debt $150,000 seems like a better idea than moving in with your parents and working minimum wage while you look for a better job, but there you go.
I had a feeling Cornell was overloaded with applications because they deferred most of their EA applicants to the regular pool and didn't get back to many of them until the deadline. |
