Wot is the truth behind the smoking ban?

What is the truth. Cigarretes kill. Yet there is another side. It is government controlling yet another aspect of our lives. Government had a great time collecting taxes on cigarretes...then they went and screwed over Big Tobacco by slamming them with lawsuits where they had to settle with huge sums of money. Seems that someone needs to justify their position or at the very least feels hypocritical.

It's realy, realy simple STOP SMOKING. Not only beat the ban, but do yourself a favour at the same time.

I have to laugh when I hear people going on about they don't want to inhale my cigarette smoke.
Last time I was in Africa, people were crossing the road rather than walk past me. They eyed my cigarette as if I was holding a grenade.
I had to laugh because while they were behaving silly,...Huge lorries and ancient taxis were rumbling past and belching out thick smoke with the foulest of smell.
It's only slightly different here...Whatever they do...We wont ever be rid of smoke.
Cigarette smoke is the least of our worries.

There might be more laws coming out that define "an enclosed space", as well as specify some exemptions. I don't think these have been published though.

Smoke-free premises

(1) Premises are smoke-free if they are open to the public.

But unless the premises also fall within subsection (2), they are smoke-free only when open to the public.
(2) Premises are smoke-free if they are used as a place of work-

(a) by more than one person (even if the persons who work there do so at different times, or only intermittently), or
(b) where members of the public might attend for the purpose of seeking or receiving goods or services from the person or persons working there (even if members of the public are not always present).
They are smoke-free all the time.
(3) If only part of the premises is open to the public or (as the case may be) used as a place of work mentioned in subsection (2), the premises are smoke-free only to that extent.

(4) In any case, premises are smoke-free only in those areas which are enclosed or substantially enclosed.

(5) The appropriate national authority may specify in regulations what "enclosed" and "substantially enclosed" mean.

(6) Section 3 provides for some premises, or areas of premises, not to be smoke-free despite this section.

(7) Premises are "open to the public" if the public or a section of the public has access to them, whether by invitation or not, and whether on payment or not.

(8) "Work", in subsection (2), includes voluntary work.

It is just about the control of peoples lives. Thats what politians go into politics for - control freaks. Its stupid and it wont work. It will be thrown out when people come to their senses. A pub is for smoking and drinking - period!

What's going on depends on where you live. Public smoking is already banned in most public places and most workplaces. As for bars and restaurants, again, it depends on where you live. Some big cities like New York and Chicago have banned it there too. Most places just have seperate areas for smokers. But the push is definately on to ban it everywhere. Some cities in California have banned smoking in cars, and one even banned it in people's homes (no word on how they're gonna enforce that one!). So, like I said, it depends on where you live. I'd watch the local news and read the local paper if I were you.

I think it depends upon what state you live in...Because where I live, is in Arizona........and we can get a ticket, for throwing a butt on the ground I heard, if caught doing so....But, I dont like to polute anyway, so I always, knock the "cherry" off of my smoke, and then put the butt, in the car trash, or a trash can somewhere, when I know its for sure completely out....What's ironic, however, is at my college campus, they have ashtrays, on the sides of every trashcan built into them,, and there's a sign on all of the door's stating no smoking allowed within so many feet of the school entrances.....WHAT?!!! It makes no sense to me...and I noticed they dont enforce smokers to not smoke (on campus) away from those ashtrays, right by the doors......And everyone smokes right there, when they have a break, so it makes "no sense" to me....It's the same at all of our town's stores, too! The ashtrays are right by the main doors!!! But, hey until I quit, I'm not complaining, one bit!!!!......And I will obey all laws, when & if they do enforce them, because that's what we all have to do, right? Right. I heard there are other states that dont even allow people to smoke in "Public" period!! Because when I was at the grocery store , once sometime back, this gal came up to me, and asked me if smoking was allowed in our town? And I said, "Why Yes, everyone smokes everywhere, here in Kingman" and she said cuz where I'm from we're not allowed too" I was shocked! When she told me this! And she was a "Happy Camper" that she could smoke anywhere she pleased to do so!! So, I think it just depends on what state you live in, hun! smile! I hope I was of a little help for you.....

Yeah passive smoking is a big deal. People have the right to not smoke, these days everyone smokes whether its willingly or not imho

i think it depends on what city the ban is at. but i believe it's generally in public locations, ie: restaurants. i also heard that there are some bars in DC that are banning cigarettes and cigars.

here is what i think. I think that when you are outside, you should be able to smoke. If you go to the club and owner smokes he should be able to say my club is non smoking or smoking. he should have the right to do that. If it ends up being a non smoking club, the smokers need to go out side to smoke. However if he decides he wants it to be smoking optional then non smokers need to have to go somewhere else or not complain. As a american, I have the right to go to any club i want to. If it has a policy that bans smoking, i have the right to go somewhere else as a smoker. I do not have the right to overrule the owner and effect his business. I also do not have the right to when i decide not to smoke, to tell everyone else they can not do it. Smokers have rights troo.

btw, as a consideration for non smokedrs, I have no problem going outside. However, I do resent that smokers are taxed so heavily. We are told it is a sin tax. Those who do not like smokers need to realize that if you have given the govt permision to tax people for undesirbale habbits that effect their health then you have given them permission to tax you on your habbits that effect your help. Its called a sin tax and they are trying to pass a bill now that would effect eating out at resturants period. Hmm,.

It's about health. Many of us don't want to be encircled
with other people's bad habit of smoking. I live in a smoke-
free city. It is wonderful. No smoking in any public
building, restaurant, hospital, library, school, retail store,
or bar. Let people smoke in their own homes and breathe
that cancer-causing smoke if they must. Don't be blowing
it in my face as smokers have been able to do for years
in the past. This is the truth. Smokers need to give it up and
live longer. Not good for anyone's lungs. Give it up and feel
better, live longer, love life, help your neighbors do the same.

which city/state. It will differ as it's a city code but many cities near me are no smoking in all buildings. food or no food. It will soon be in public period.

sure..people like me are sick and tired of other people with this habit. its long overdue and my right to live a healthy life trumps your right to slowly kill yourself and me in public. im glad it happend and legislators started to listen. wherever its gone its not far enough...the movement is legtitmate and gaining ground.
