Would capital punishment lower crime rates?

I think if it was done in the right way, yes. The problem with the way its done today is it takes too long to carry out punishment. If your guilty of any crime involving children such as kidnapping, molestation, murder, or any combination; after being sentenced you should be brought outside the courtroom and shot. Same goes for multiple murders, or kidnapping and raping women. If these useless wastes of good oxygen weren't allowed to sit on death row for years at a time and just taken out as soon as they're senteced, they might think twice before doing some of these crimes. Its time we brought back "an eye for an eye" type of justice, because the way things are right now, where it seems that the criminals have more rights than the victims, is not working.

Professor Sheed
Studies have shown that it is not an efficacious deterant of crime.

There's no evidence that it does.

If you always do what you always done, you always get what you always got. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Does capital punishment lower crime rates? Never has. Will killing more than we do now lower crime? The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Wanna lower crime? increase literacy, job skills and employment opportunities. Will that eliminate crime? No, but it will go farther, cheaper than capital punishment.

Besides deterrent, is there a place in society for capital punishment? Certainly. Let's accept that society has to be protected from psychopathic sociopaths and those intent on doing GREAT harm to society, and leave specious arguments out of the equation.

Not enough to be worth it.

No. This has been extensively studied. Capital punishment has no deterrent effect. It is purely punitive.

No, look at statistics for crime rates now. As an example, CA has the death penalty and violent crime is rampant throughout the state, the same is true for other states with the death penalty.

Part of the problem with the death penalty is that the process takes years, because of appeals and reviewing the case, in short it's more expensive than keeping them locked up without parole.

The best way to lower crime rates is to combat the causes of crime such as poverty and unemployment, that would significantly reduce crime rates.

No. Within the United States, violent crime rates are higher in states and regions with the death penalty than in those without it. No credible study has shown that capital punishment deters others. Criminals do not think they will be caught, let alone punished severely (if they think at all.)

BTW, the death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process, which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people. And 48 states (all except New Mexico and Alaska now how life without parole on the books. It means exactly what it says.

Probably not. The only thing we can do to lower crime rates is to defend our amendments, and by that I mean, everyone has guns. That would lower the crime rate alot. Look at Switzerland. They have a super low crime rate, why? Cause everybody has guns, and if anyone does anything bad, they get shot. What incentive is better then knowing you have a high chance of dying before you even get to the legal system?

Its kinda like the guy in Texas. He saw his friends house getting robbed, called the cops, they said to let them go, hes like, "I have a gun," Click, "Want me to shoot them". The lady said no, he said they were getting away, she said don't go out cause youll get shot, he went out anyways and you hear. "Your dead!" Blam, Blam.....Blam. Of course the two robbers died, and the guy was arrested for killing them, but its a law there to protect your things even if you kill them, only he was protecting his friends, which the law states you can if you have permission by the friend.

Of course that was a huge story, who would try to rob there again? If I heard that I would steer clear of there. Now, imagine if everyone had guns, not just the criminals like they are trying to do. They give kids anti depressants and give them violent videogames, they go kill people with guns, then the government says guns must be banned! Of course, itll be like New Orleans where all the innocent people, the law abiding citizens, they will have no guns. The government will and so will the criminals. Crime rates will go up massively.

Short answer, everyone owns guns. Every state has the policy where killing someone isnt illegal if you are protecting yourself, home, friends home, or the government tries taking your belongs cause they suddenly think its illegal to own. Crime would plummet in every state.

Yes, to a certain degree, but some criminals never learn.

Yes, it has been so effective here in Texas that no one has ever murdered another person ever. Oh wait, I'm sorry, that's not accurate....

My point is prison is no life who will hire thse people? ifyou put some one in protective custody What kind of life is that. also i feel second conviction for violent crime game over. Guy is on trial for killing 26 women Will you hire him if he gets out?

trikster
I doubt it murderrers don't plan on getting caught and somme commit suicide after there dirty deed. What it does do is save taxpayer dollars by not having to pay room and board for 20 to 50 years and frees up space so that we can incarcerate violent offenders instead of releasing them after 2 or 3 months

Yes, if it was used more.
In 2005, there were ~16,000 murders, but there was only 60 executions. Clearly, if there is less than a 1% chance that you will get the death penalty, then it isn't a deterrent. We need to increase the number of executions by 10 fold or more, then it would be a deterrent.

Yeah i think so, criminals need something to be afraid of to make them think twice before committing a crime.
