Would i be withdrawn or my parents contacted before i failed from excessive absences?
Find answers to your legal question.

Would i be withdrawn or my parents contacted before i failed from excessive absences?

i go to a cleveland public school and have excessive absences, though ALL of them are excused ones. i have a 4.0 GPA and always make up my work.

my chemistry teacher told me last semester if i missed many more days that i would fail regardless of my grades.

considering i am a minor, wouldn't the school have to contact my parents, either through setting up a conference or sending home a letter before they could fail me due to this? or wouldn't i have to be withdrawn first?

I don’t live in OH, but I can tell you that in my state (and I assume it’s the same in every state) a child is required to attend school a certain number of days per year, and if they have not attended the required number of days—regardless of rather those absences are excused or not, and regardless of the child’s grade—they certainly can fail the child. It’s not illegal. In fact, they are following the law exactly.

Here the school will notify the parents when the child reaches the ‘danger zone’, but I would imagine that is a courtesy and not a legal requirement. Since they were excused absences, obviously your parents are aware of the number of days you’ve been absent, and at the beginning of the year they likely received something stating how many days per year students are required to attend school (if you got a student handbook, it was probably in there), so in essence, your parents have been notified.

If your parents are not aware of this conversation that took place with your chemistry teacher (and I rather get the impression, they’re not), tell them. And if I were your parents I would be calling the teacher to set up an appointment for a meeting. (some advice here--your parents should not show up at that meeting with an attitude or 'threats' of any kind).

And don’t miss any more days of school.

No. That's up to the individual teacher. I'd talk to your parents about this and then have them talk to the teacher to explain the situation.

Your parents can meet with the school's guidance counselor to deal with your excessive absences and see what can be done about not failing in your grades. Talk with your parents about your concerns and options.

I seriously doubt they would fail you with a GPA of 4.0 just for absences...excused ones at that.
If you are worried, call the school district and find out from them. The teacher just may be trying to scare you into attending more often.

Since these are all excused absences (which I'm assuming means School Board approved reasons) then your Science teacher has no power to over-ride School Board rulings. Discuss this with your parents & have them set up a meeting between principal & science teacher. Request that the teacher arrive with grade book to meeting.

Tell parents to be on the watch for teacher letting personal emotion about how you can "skate through course" with high grades & little attendance. And to point out to principal that these are not academic reasons for damaging your GPA.

With 4.0 you'll have very good college choices that will affect your later income earnings. Parents should point this out as being of such legal interest to ACLU or such.

Make it to where chemistry teacher would just rather leave you be for the remainder of the year w/o any legal battles.
