Would it be illegal to carry a parachute onboard a commerical airplane?

I don't know if its ILLEGAL to open the door of an airborne plane, but having a parachute is a damn good idea.. Oh and if its going down and everyone is gonna die, who gives a **** if its legal, whos gonna tell?!?!?!?!?!!

Well it might not be illegal in the sense that the Feds have a law against it, but if it doesn't fit in the carry-on check box the airlines may make you check it

The Transport Security Administration does not list a parachute as a prohibited item. You are, therefore, allowed to take it onboard a commercial airliner.

In the absolute emergency you mention it would not be considered a crime unless in the process you increased the possibility that others would be injured or killed.

It would probably be opened by airport security and at least need repacked. Most likely you would be detained and questioned to the point of missing your flight anyway.
It is illegal to open the exit door of a plane, even if it is falling, for any reason as you place the plane, passengers, and crew at risk doing so.

Illegal or not, it's impossible. It is impossible to open the airplane door while in flight. They are locked down, and the pressure difference between the inside and outside make it impossible.

I am sure if you were caught trying to bring a parachute on, that flight wouldn't take off on-time and you would get quite familiar with a Federal agent's rubber glove.

It IS illegal for you to open the door. However, the parachute may be legal. As long as it has no "dangerous" objects and fits in the sizing containers, then it is fine.

I would think so. As long as its not your fault that the plane crashed, its ok to save your own life. The government might find it suspicious that you coincidentally had a parachute and saved your own life while the plane crashed and everyone else died.

Definitely not (unless it has changed recently) - I have carried a parachute in hand luggage in the UK, US and Russia. Best to go to special check in tho as they could ask you to open it which would be chaotic! Also if you have an AAD (automatic activation device) make sure it is disarmed and you have the paperwork showing it meets FIA approval to be carried on a plane [it is a small pyrotechnic device after all]. I was asked by a passenger once if that was a parachute - I said "yes ... didn't you get yours?" not sure she entirely appreciated the joke.

As for getting out in the event of the crash I doubt even a professional skydiver would have the time to kit-up, get to and open the door (fighting the cabin crew and passengers who probably don't relish that whole depressurisation thing) then bale out. It would be an offense if you opened the door as they would probably say it added to the problem.

Notwithstanding this it is perfectly possible to bale out of a jet (I did although it was out the back of a military jet rather than the side door of a commercial aircraft).

Overall its simply not going to happen so the illegal part is kind of irrelevant.
