Would it be legal to change your last name before the age of 18?
|
Right now I am currently 14, turning 15 in September and you see I want to change my last name, but really my parents and I have no idea of what the cost would be. Also I want to know if it's legal because I don't know, people say you can only change it when you're married, but really I've heard of some people changing it even when they aren't married.
So yea I'd like to know if its legal or not.
And also the range cost, please.
Thanks! ^.^

You can name yourself anything. And, you can even have multiple names. You can do business as a "corporation" or a "dba". But the problem you are having is legal recognition of your new name. In some states, it's simply a matter of publishing your name change in the local newspaper. In other states it may be more complex.
Your parents have the authority to register you for school, until you are eighteen. So, you need their blessing in order to change your name at school.
For your drivers license, you simply need to apply for a name change at the Motor Vehicle department.
Because you are a minor, and not allowed to legally contract with anyone. So, in order for someone to recognize your name change, legally, you need to be 18.
At this stage, the best you can do is tell your friends "Just Call Me....." |

Hi:
Yes it is legal. You do not need to be married.
There is a cost factor involved it should not be very much.
Check the internet by typing
your city state and changing your name.
It will probably be at your city hall web page. You can get accurate information there. |
