Would marijuana legalization prevent prison overcrowding?
Find answers to your legal question.

Would marijuana legalization prevent prison overcrowding?

Would marijuana legalization prevent prison overcrowding? Also would marijuana legalization help our communities by having enough jail space to where it's harder for the other drug users and violent criminals to get released within days of their arrest?

I also feel that marijuana legalization could help lower the crime by not releasing the other drug addicts be released within days of their arrest.

Yes it would cause the majority of the pot smokers don't go out and commit crimes against others just to support their habits, plus if marijuana was legal this would mean that the other drug addicts are less likely to be released from prison right away and they won't be back on the streets for at least a few months after their arrest and I think them not releasing the other drug users within a short period of time after their arrest would really help lower the crime rate.

I would rather see somebody smoking pot over somebody burglarizing homes so they can get high on drugs like meth or crack.

Maybe. I don't think it could hurt. Look at all the alcoholics who commit crimes,ie, dui's. Marijuana is a lot better than alcohol.

I doubt it would make that much of a difference. Most people who are caught arent carrying large quantities. It doesnt become a felony unless its a 1/4 lbs, and you would charged with intent to distribute.Anything less is a misdemeanor, so unless you have a criminal background, fines and probation is all you get. Im not sure of the penalties if your caught growing....

A better argument for legalization, would be that the government could control and tax the sale of marijuana. I read somewhere americans spend around 14 billion annually on pot. If the tax was only 6%, thats 840 million each year. Sounds pretty good to me considering our economy.

Furthermore Smile should try basing their comments on fact. Bringing up alcohol and cigarettes only strengthen the argument for legalization. How many people actually wait until they are 21 to drink, and how many people are killed by drunk driving? How many people have died from smoking cigarettes? If your going to bring that up, the numbers tell me those 2 should be illegal, not marijuana. And for the record, I dont smoke pot.

That may very well make sense, but I really think that the death penalty and not letting child molestors, rapists, and murderers sit on death row for 25 years once they've been convicted would help keep from the jails being overcrowded. Legalizing small, non-threatening crimes isn't what is going to fix that problem. That's just removing laws so that we can house serial killers and rapists. Why house them when it's been proven that they cannot get well and they do those things out of misery? Just put them out of their misery.

There are thousands of good things legalization of marijuana would accomplish. But they will never be seen, because the people who believe what they are told without reasoning, usually by those who have to most to gain by lying(alcohol lobby, DEA, prison systems), will continue to think of it as the devil's weed.

Like the two above me. Richard thinks people would commit crimes to get access to something that they would be able to by openly for a reasonable price. And SP thinks smoking something yourself is the same thing as taking something from someone else.

Sure would, and the ICE looking for illegal aliens within our borders should be used for traffic cops then we would not have a problem with speeders.

If we let the prisons empty of the guys who just robbed grocery stores and left room for the bank robbers we would have less bank robberies.

No, because all the crimes committed by the vastly increased numbers of stoners would far outpace the current number of incarcerated stoners.

i totally agree with S P.

that is stupid.

the guy bellow him, is also stupid.

marijuana is a class A drug, legalization is just encouraging taking it. and it may prevent prison overcrowding, slightly, but it would be a very stupid move.

take a look at alcohol.. it's legal, and i'm not saying there's anything bad with it, but it has an age limit.
if you were to legalize marijuana, there would also be an age limit (assuming)

but people under the age, would still want to take it.
and with it being legal, in a few years time, people would be less educated about the harm it does, therefor taking it, and becoming addicted.

legalizing marijuana is absolutely stupid,
if you want to prevent prison overcrowding,
make more prisons!

even still, change the prisons.
take away the tvs, make the criminals work to survive.

the problem is not with prison overcrowding,
it is the prisons themselves.

legalizing marijuana is absolutely stupid..
crime would be encouraged; because when the criminals are "high" they would be more likely to commit crime.

and as S P said; why don't you just legalize rape, then murder, hell, get rid of prisons all together, then prison overcrowding won't be a problem.

don't be stupid.
marijuana should not be legalized.
