Sometimes I think it's justified. But to say with DNA testing and current technology that we don't put innocent people to death is just wrong, because it still happens. Life is not like CSI. |

No, but I'd make life mean life. No time off for good behaviour only time added on for bad behaviour. And make the prison regime so hard that nobody would want to re-offend. |

Forensics may have improved, but there are several features of the justice system which cannot yet be described as 'water-tight'! Just on principle I would have to say no. |

Such a difficult one...
on the one hand, they have violated the supreme right of others to live - so why should they?
.. but then, if we murder them, aren't we as bad?
Human life has GOT to be sacred, so ultimately I have to say 'No' dont bring back the death penalty - but we really should make prisons much more miserable places to be - ban their TVs, video games, snooker rooms, smoking - make it BAD! |

It's a violation of several int'l conventions on human rights. Including the U.N.'s charter on human rights. It's not a question of 'bring back the death penalty' it's whether a human being is guaranteed certain dignity and human rights. The stuff that goes on the U.S. is an embarrassment. Every time I go to Amnesty International's profile page for the states it makes me cringe to see how long the list has gotten in recent years. |

UK answer, i don't think the re instated death penalty here would stop the ever increasing murders, they have the death penalty in parts of the USA and murders are still committed.

No never. Killing isn't right. Killing someone who's crime was to kill someone makes you just as bad as they are. Two wrongs don't make it right. Killing and death is the easy was out. I think its worse to be made to live for years in jail. Make them suffer with a horrible confined existence, where they have to get through each day knowing they will never be free. |

No I don't believe it should be allowed. Desmond Tutu in the guardian Nov of last years says 'Nowhere has it been shown that the death penalty reduces crime or political violence.'
I see the death penalty as revenge not punishment. Two wrongs don't make a right. |

If you don't think the death penalty is still in effect, try killing someone in Texas... |

Surely there's more to it than that? I'm not too sure that taking a person's life is our decision. I understand that there are some very sick people out there that murder/rob/rape etc but I don't see how society killing them is any better than what they have done?
People would have to be employed to administer lethal injections or flick the switch on the chair - surely those are job vacancies we don't want to open up in the UK?
I agree our justice system is in a state - I used to work within it - but there has to be another alternative. |

No.
Punishment is not a deterrent. Getting caught is what deters.
I would change my mind if it can be proved to me that less people will die if capital punishment is restored. |

Mistakes still happen and innocent people still go to prison, it would be terrifying if an innocent person was executed.
It is better that life imprisonment should mean life, treat them like slaves while they are in there and make sure prison is prison and not a holiday camp. |

Real life is not a CSI episode or legal show. Forensics still has ample areas to improve and the most important part, the legal process itself, could use work. It is shocking that several hundred innocent people have been released from death row.
If you were charged with a crime would you fully trust the legal system to defend you against any errors? No? Now, pretend you are black and you live in Texas?
I would prefer that incarceration not be so comfortable and let imprisonment be more of a punishment for life if someone is convicted of a truly horrific crime. The US has not done a very good job of implementing its capital punishment practice in the past or present and it is embarassing when comparing our penal system to other industrialized countries. |

no. it's not up to the government to murder its own citizens. |
|

And Why Not?
 |
No definitely not. The so called death penalty is simply MURDER BY THE STATE - nobody, corporate or individual has the right to take anothers life. And regardless of DNA etc mistakes always will happen; especially with Police keen to get a conviction on murders at all costs - don't try to say that they never fit people up because they do, regularly! However, life must always mean life so that convicted murderers will die in jail and they will know that will happen |
|

oh buggar!!!

I think you should get what you dished out ie: if you burgled somebody then all your possessions should be taken, if you raped someone, your bits should come off, and if you murdered someone you should either be killed or stay in prison for life and I mean LIFE until they die and never to be let out again! Can't see any of that happening tho can you? |

NO NO NO NO NO!
Criminals like Huntley etc. Must live the rest of their lives in their own private hell! Death is too quick & too good for them.
Also, you bring back the Death Penalty & then people will want more crimes punished by death.
Next thing you know, Gays & Bi, Foreigners, we'll all be for it! |

The area of forensics has a great fascination for me and I think that the progress in this area is beyond amazing. I don't believe in the death penalty but to be honest if my daughter was raped and/or killed and he was positively accused I would push the button myself! |

No. Let the other prisioners kill the killer, while the officers turn a blind eye. We save money that way. A killer does not deserve a peaceful death. |

We cannot bring in the death penalty whilst in the EU. Simple as.
However, I am against the death penalty totally. DNA evidence is not as conclusive as you think but the issue is not about convicting the innocent or being 100% sure you have the right man. The issue is killing others is wrong. If we take a life by execution we have institutionalised a wrong. I think there are enough wrongs in our society as it is.

No defiantly not I would never bring it back. There are many arguments against I agree with most.
In cases of murder to execute them makes us as bad as that individual. As Ghandi said ' and eye for an eye makes the world blind' it achieves nothing.
Also the criminal does not have to suffer or deal with what they have done for very long its short and over. True punishment is to make the criminal realise their crimes and have to deal with the guilt for the rest of their lives that is punishment,
Another argument I may not take at times. Is that we not god. Only god has the right to take a life.
The crime system can make mistakes and DNA evidence although good still has a few issues with many layers of DNA it proves you were there but not that you committed the crime itself.
But over all I believe we are better than a murderer we do not stoop to their levels and kill as a society I would like to think we are more developed.
The man that killed my cousin in a hit and run is still alive and having to deal with what he did he has to suffer the guilt of taking a life he did get off by being executed and not having to feel again. |

No. It was God who gave us all life and humans have no right to take it away. But I'm getting very annoyed if the worst scum of criminals like child abusers and rapists get out of prison after a few years, so they can have a new go and find new victims. Those people should never get out of prison again. On the other hand, people who just committed an offence regarding money, like copyright breaches etc., or minor offences, shouldn't be locked away, they should just be fined, I think. |
