Im also Republican and live in Alabama (very red state) but I'm right there with you. These people want to be together - so let them. The church is it's on private entity and can refuse to recognize it - but if they want their union to be recognized by the state for purposes of tax, homestead, etc. then jeez let them.

At least these people want to be together - its Hollywood marriages that ruin the "institution of marriage" anyway.

People who oppose gay marriage say things like, "allowing gays to marry will raise the divorce rate statistics" as if straight people haven't screwed that up. Simple answer: Have seperate statistics for gay marriages! I'm all for gay rights.

I agree with you. I'm straight. I live in Florida. We have an amendment which is on the ballot to ban gay marriage. I am a Republican as well.

And like you said, I have nothing against it.

Personally government has no business getting involved in anyone's private personal affairs.

As far as families is concerned, look around at all of the single parents out there. What about the latch-key kids? The so-called nuclear family has been in a meltdown since the early 1960s.

Therefore, I think the anti-gay case about "families first" is in fact nothing more than a smokescreen.

Come to think of it, I support the pro-choice position and frankly and really upset that my party has been held hostage for the last 28 years by the so-called "moral majority".

Government is about fiscal conservatism, less is more, that kind of thing. Therefore, less IS more. Stay out of our bedrooms, leave us alone already, and just do what governments ordinarily do which is keep the peace, regulate commerce among the states and foreign nations, mint and print money, make postage franchises, and keep the roads, bridges, and airways moving and humming along.

The rest of us will do nicely without extraordinary government intervention in our personal lives.

Dont worry people will complain and plenty of more prop 8s will come along but the reality is that gay marriage is going to happy sooner rather than later.

It won't.

What it WILL do is change Actuarial Statistics.

As it is now, a certain percentage of the population receives Social Security, following which they die without a Spouse.

When Gay Marriage becomes Law, that percentage will decline, meaning Gay Marriage will increase the overall Liabilities of the Social Security System, which we already know is "stretched" to say the least.

How much will the cost increase? I don't know. What other forms of government pensions will it impact? I don't know.

Is it the right thing to do, regardless of the budgetary impacts? Perhaps it is.

Is it the right thing to do without examining the impact on the budgets for funding these things? I don't think so. You don't crash a system for everyone just because it is deemed "unfair" to a few.

My sentiment exactly. I am a white woman, married to a man and want equal rights for all people. Whether it is called Marriage or Partnership or Union is unimportant.
It is so interesting that religious zealots are always trying to force their belief on others. Often wonder which God they are praying to.

My concern has to do with the role the institution of the family has in our society. The 'family' is an institution whose role in society is to prepare the next generation for adulthood. Non functional families produce children who typically have lower educational achievements, higher substance abuse rates, higher crime rates and overall lower lifetime earnings. In addition non-traditional families have significantly higher poverty rates.

In short we need to enhance the prestige of the 'traditional family' unit in order to create more functional families. By allowing the concepts of marriage and the family to be weakened by allowing changes that will have no overall benefit to society is nothing more than social experimentation whose best outcome is minimal damage.

Marriage to many is to procreate and Gays do not do that. How about just a civil union that allows you to do taxes together, own property and just call it as that.

It won't. It's another divisive scare tactic. It writes discrimination straight into the state constitution. There's nothing at all right about it. Most of its backers aren't even from California - they're from states like Utah. Vote No on Prop 8 because it's wrong.

This is what we are forced to consider potentially harmful to our society when we can't take on the real problems because of a general lack of courage and will power.

2 gays cannot possibly give a child all the needs they are entitled to under a man and woman unity. I have gay friends too so don't think i am a basher or anything. I just believe the home is more structured and balanced by a man and a woman. For me it's an insult to God so that's where my beliefs are based.
