I am employed by Macy's and work in their restaurant division. After being employed there for a few months one of the managers asked me to shave my beard. I told her that it states in the associate handbook that beards are fine as long as they're trimmed to a certain length and shaved at the neck. She stated that because my beard does not connect from the mustache to the cheek area that I had to shave it. (My beard grows in like Johnny Depp's beard). I asked her if the employee guidlines had changed or was that just her policy. She ignored that and told me I must have it shaved before my next shift. I then called the General Manager and asked him if my beard was ok at the workplace. He said yes. When I came in for my next shift, the manager who asked me to shave in the 1st place told me to go home and shave. She said I had to be back clean shaved within 10 minutes or she would take my shifts away. Here's the thing...there is another employee working there who has an identical beard style as me. I said if you're going to change the policy on your own at least you should enforce it on everybody. She told me this concerns me. She is the shift manager and since then all of my shifts have been cut. I gave in and shaved my beard (which I've had for about 7 years). There has been a recent hire who has a beard and feel like that's a slap in my face. I've grown my beard back since she gave me more than enough time off to do so and I am scheduled to work with her this week. I know she'll want to write me up for this and send me home. Do I have any kind of case here?

Why not tell the General Manager what's going on with her rather than just asking him what he thinks. That's why he's there, to keep the managers in check. Tell him you think she may have some sort of personal vendetta against you; if, after all, your beard was indeed within regulation length and there are other beardies at your workplace |
