can rent a center do this?

I purchased a ps3 from rent a center some time in march, while i stilll had my job. I recently lost my job and wasnt able to make payments. My mom went there to tell them that she would be making my payments since i lost my job. They then put the account in her name without her permission causing the price to go up more because of her income. can they really do this?

no new contract was made. they just told her that it's now in her name

The original contract is null and void if you are no longer responsible for payments. It was rewritten in your mom's name since she named herself as responsible party. It's perfectly legal. Next time, just have your mom give you the money and you make the payments as you were before. No need for a new contract with new terms that way.

You don't get it. When your mother agreed to assume responsibility for payments, the rental center couldn't get your name off of the contract fast enough, especially if they have been harassing you for payments. Your mother called (or went in), volunteered to make them, gave them her name and from that, she is now the proud owner of a PS3 and it is her responsibility to make payments on it. If you were behind more than a payment or two, it's possible that the fees and interest accumulated on those late payments made the total due go up and in turn made the payment amounts increase.

Again, and as stated before, if you didn't want this to happen, you should have either returned the item, or asked your mom for the money for the payments which *you* would continue to make.

Okay, I get that you lost your job, and I get that your mother is going to cover the payments for your toys until you get another one.

Are you really such a dipwad that you not only have her provide the money, you have her take it there, too? You can't be bothered to take the borrowed money down there yourself? You don't have a job, so what's so important that you can't go take care of your own business?

No, they can't do that without her permission. I'm betting they got it.
