I recently applied for and got a job working at a sporting goods store. On my third day of work, I was asked to go back to the office with the manager. He briefly informed me that I had checked NO on the box that asked if I had a felony charge. My background check had come in and I had lied so I was terminated.
I was shocked. I had been checking the NO box for 7 years without a problem. I have had many jobs in my home town in Texas and at a ski resort in Colorado. No one has ever mentioned anything. When the manager at the sports store told me I had a felony, I knew exactly what he was talking about.
When I was 18, a 17 year old friend of a friend wanted me to pawn his guitar for him. I had never pawned anything, so I suggested we go to the Guitar Center. Once there, I told the person at the desk “hi, I want to sell this guitar for my friend who is not old enough.” the man said that was not an option., but that I could sell the guitar under my name. I said OK. He said he had to check some books and he would get back to me with a price if I wanted to wait.
We hung out at the store for about an hour. Then the police showed up. As it turn out, that was his fathers guitar. He had just bought it and had it appraised at the same Guitar Center. It was worth a ton, and the employee recognized it right away. When the police questioned us, I told the truth. I told them I was trying to sell it for this kid because he was not old enough. I guess he knew how much trouble he was in because he started naming many different names and when asked, his story was never the same.
We were both put in jail for 3 days. His parents pressed charges, and then dropped the charges after 3 days. We never saw a judge, and there was no court case. Needless to say I never spoke to that guy again. But now 7 years later I lost a job over what I thought wasn’t an issue.
Can anyone give me some advice? I’m 25 and trying to start my career in hospitality management soon when I finish school, and I’m really worried about this coming up again and ruining something good.. I don’t really know what my options are, and I don’t have any real understanding of the court system. Any advice would be appreciated
