I currently work in an office at a campsite (160 acres) and my boss is requiring that I punch in/out in the Dining Hall, which is far away from the office. It just seems like a waste of my time, and the company's time to walk all the way there and back for punching in/out/lunch.
Is this even legal?

Have you expressed your concern about the man-hours being wasted by doing this to your boss? Don't tell him it's a waste of your time (it really isn't since you are on company time), but let him know you could be more productive if you could punch in at a nearer time-clock.
Add the numbers up for him. If it takes 10 minutes to walk from the time-clock to where you work, that comes to a total of 1 hour and 40 minutes a week.And if you stretch that out to an entire year, it's 2 weeks (5 day work week at 8 days a day) of just walking back and forth. And this isn't even counting the punching in and out for lunch breaks. Double it to include this. Now you are looking at close to an entire month of man hours just to punch in and out. |

It may be a waste of your time, but it's company policy. You need to eat in the dining hall, or park your car near the dining hall so that you won't have to walk so far. Now, if you company was smart, they would do an on line time card and save every one some time. |

Yes, they can make you do that.
Wasting company time at the demands of the company is pretty much standard practice in every company. We spend hours a day in idiotic meetings, a total waste of time.. but totally legal. |
