"Never aim/draw your weapon if.."?
Find answers to your legal question.

"Never aim/draw your weapon if.."?

You know the old saying that a lot of folks go by, "Never draw/aim your weapon unless you're planning on using it"?

Do you agree or disagree with that?

I've often heard many gun experts and gun fanciers in general say that you should never draw, or point your weapon unless you're going to fire it.

That does make sense, but also to a certain extent, I disagree with it.

Why do I disagree?

Because there have been many instances where simply displaying, drawing, or pointing your firearm has deterred would-be criminals without having to actually potentially take a life.

I've seen many news programs and articles saying how the gun owner displayed his firearm at the intruder, and the intruder fled. Of course, some would rather shoot and kill the intruder on site, but for those who wish to deter crime rather than destroy the criminal, I would think that simply displaying your weapon would be a good option without having to take a life.

Of course, displaying your weapon and not firing it could give the intruder a chance to pull a weapon of his own, but it's just food for thought.

What do you think?

I never said anything about "Not being willing" to use it. I said drawing your weapon itself is enough to be a deterrent to crime. How often to police officers draw and point their weapon without actually firing it?

There is a significant difference between being willing to use the weapon and ultimately choosing to do so.

The point of that saying is that once you draw that weapon, whatever you are involved in becomes a life and death matter whether it was before or not. The person you are pointing that weapon at will now act according to that fact.

Therefore, if you have it in your mind that you just want to 'scare' someone, that's a bad time to draw a weapon. If you have it in your mind that it might be necessary to kill someone to defend yourself, THAT is when you draw a weapon.

If it then turns out that you don't have to kill them after all - so much the better.

never draw it unless you're prepared to use it

never put your finger on the trigger unless you're aiming

and never aim it unless you're prepared to kill what you're aiming at

If you are not prepared to use your weapon when you draw it, you give the intruder a chance to take it from you and use it against you. If you are not prepared to use it, you are safer if you are unarmed.
