what is the first question on the voters registration form?

and on the student loan form? the first is name of student. the second is PRIMARY residence. then comes another question. if a student claims a residence other than the parents or home for more than 6 months of the year, like college, can the parent still claim the student as a dependent living in the home? can the irs claim fraud.

Its more complicated than that. If you receive most of your living expenses from your parents and your parents claim you as a dependent and YOU claim yourself as an independent, its YOU who would be committing irs fraud, not your parents. I believe the question of dependability is that they can claim you if you receive more than Half support from your parents. This can include plus loans, and/or any other college expenses that they pay.

With Student loans, the decision to classify you as an independent student is seperate from your parent's taxes. Even if they don't decide to take the credit for you as a child, the federal aid will still determine that you are a dependent, and you will have to show them proof that you are paying your rent. This is most of the time handled by the school and they will require you show a pay check, last year taxes where you PAID taxes, an ID with a seperate address from your parents, Bills, rental agreement and all kinds of documentation showing you are supporting yourself. In otherwords, the question of residency is just a survey to determine eligibility, not the final answer. The basic determination is your age. If you are under a certain age, in order to get independent status you will have to hold a full time job for a year and pay taxes while living away from your parents for at least one tax season. And by pay taxes, I mean you have to pay some money to government, not get it all back.

So its not as simple as you having a separate residence cause you could be living in an apartment and your parents are paying your rent, you are still their dependent. In addition, with the new health care law, they can now claim that up till you are 27 while still in school. So with the Federal aid, if your parents claim you as dependent, then you have to include their financial information--you are not an independent student.

With voting, its different. It is all about age and where you actually reside and depends on each state and local. The voting laws are different everywhere. You'll have to check your local voting laws to see.

Most of the time if you are off campus and have your own residence for a year, whether or not your parents pay for it, you can get your voter registration in the specific county and district you live in. But then again, it depends. Last election, certain states that favored Obama were allowed to loosen their restrictions to allow even students that lived on campus to apply for registration.
