does it pi** anyone else off that they pick on cigarettes so much...sin tax..constantly going up on the taxes of cigarettes...alcohol does as much damage..so does hot dogs lunch meat hamburgers chips...obesity just ranked as the leading cause of preventable death...so how come alcohol isn't being taxed to he**...or for that matter how come a hamburgers hot dogs things like that aren't being taxed to death...i don't think anyone in this forum has not been affected by the results of drinking...and does anyone have a useful link to protest the taxes on cigarettes...i can understand not letting me smoke in public it hurts other people...how come i can drink in public...getting hit by drunk drivers hurts too! is it because states make so much money off drunk drivers.

I don't have so much of an issue with taxing cigarettes. It's arguable that the public incurs a certain cost as a result of smoking and the associated health effects - although the same could be said of all the other things you mention.
What I do take issue with are laws against smoking in privately owned businesses. It's one thing with public buildings, since everybody has to pay for those through taxes, but when you start telling people what they or other people can or cannot do on their own property, you're crossing a line. |

Yeah, I agree. It's not that I think we should encourage smoking, but rather that we ignore drugs that are just as harmful or more harmful, and people today have a warped idea of what the relative risks are. Also, I think that some of the anti smoking measures like high taxes hurt people, while nothing is done to keep the tobacco companies (or liquor companies) from running ads that target kids.
EDIT -- I don't know how many times I've seen kids say "Oh, I would never smoke cigarettes, I just smoke weed." Those poor kids . . .
EDIT -- Gaby, tell that to the mother of a kid who's been killed by a drunk driver. Or a wife who's been beaten by her alcoholic husband. Alcohol is a serious risk to the non-drinker. |

Drunk driving =/= second hand smoke. Second hand smoke in public affects everyone around you. Drunk driving physically affects the people in each car. There has been a lot of discussion on taxing, alcohol, hamburgers, hot dogs and other junk food. |
