I am writing a book about my experiences taking care of an autistic child. I am a personal assistant for this family and help parent this child. I go to doctor appts, IEPs, etc, etc, etc. I hope to open others eyes as to the lifestyle that it takes to parent such a child. I plan to change all the names of everyone in the book but I still worry if it is legal to tell the story because it involves their child. Can you tell me my legal rights? Theirs?

I am a retired Social Worker,MSW, LCSW, who worked in Managed Healthcare for 20 years. (I also completed a Legal Assistance certification course,but am not a Lawyer) I think such a book would be very interesting, but probably a better read if you interviewed that family and got their signed permission to write about them; I think it would improved the book. You might even consider giving them the right to review what you have written about them before you send it to the publisher. And even after their review, you would still have the option of 'going with the original' or revising your text if you wanted too. Just my opinion of court. |
