I recently applied for a job position as a hostess in a hip, upscale restaurant. Had the interview this week, it went well overall, but i'm disappointed with how it ended. They're not hiring anyone who's between the ages of 18 and 21 because they are looking for people who are more "reliable" for the position. I'm 21, 22 in 5 months, and i've never heard of this before, especially with someone who's already 21 and can practically work anywhere with that age. I understood that they are looking for people that have excellent work ethics, but shouldn't that be based upon experience and not your age group? The interviewer tried to put it in a nice way, but I felt like I was just stereotyped and I got a bad vibe from my interview. Has anyone been through a situation like this before? Should this be considered age discrimination, and should I do something about it?

The conduct of the employer is unethical,but not illegal !!
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age. Now, i feel that this act should be amended to include all irrespective of age !! |

You are age protected after 45 not while young. My guess is they are much more likely to hire people between 22-30 than older people for the job but until you are over 45 and not hired for age and can prove it you have no rights.
I am 60 and would have a problem being hired for jobs I qualify for but couldn't prove why. You don't want a job where you aren't appreciated. Young women often have babies so become very unreliable |

Age discrimination laws only apply to people over 40, so you have no legal complaint. Move on..... |

This is not age discrimination, it's common sense on the part of the employer. They can not hire you for any or no reason. |

Yes, it should be considered discrimination, but no, it is not. The law prohibits discrimination against the old, but not against the young.
A better question would be whether that law violates the 14th Amendment guarantee of equal protection... |
