Am I being paid a fair rate?
Find answers to your legal question.

Am I being paid a fair rate?

I have been working as a part time cleaner at my school, i use to work my section with 3 people. Every time one of my partners was away their pay would be shared between us because of the extra work we did.
Not long ago they dropped this, so we worked for the same pay no matter how many people were away. However both my partners have left and I am now working my section on my own for the same pay as every body else. I have to do tripple the amount of work and sometimes stay longer than my hours so i can get the work done. They are employing others to work with me, but still I have been doing extra work and far more than any of the other cleaners for the same pay.
Can anyone tell me where I stand? are they allowed to give me more work for same pay? what can I do about this?
Thank you very much
x

That doesnt seem fair, and they should be employing new staff to help you do your job, but I dont think legally you have any rights. You could complain to your employer, explain the situation and why you are not happy with it or explain you will only do your fair share of work regardless of how many people are or are not working. remember the harder or more work you do, your employers will just expect this standard from you all the time and will think your lazy when you return to just doing the job your paid to do, so be careful about how much you go that extra mile

sounds to me like you are being ripped off.....contact your local Fair Labor Organization to see if they can help you get the pay you deserve

sounds to me like you need either talk to the supervisor and tell him your concern. don't know what will occur, but, if you present it in a logical way, they will listen. Will anything become of it? right now, the worst they can say is no. if the pay doesn't increase, do only what is expected of you. Nothing more, nothing less. they are allowed because you are hourly and not salaried. You have a title, not a specific job.

Hello if you have a contract stating how many hours you work then yes you can do something about it, if you haven't got a contract your stuffed and should ask for one to be drawn up stating how many hours you should work and for what pay.
Talk to your employer and ask if one of the other cleaners from a different section could help you out until they employ some more staff.
Many hands make light work and it is not right that your employers are not helping you out. best wishes.
