Am I doing the right thing?

Am I doing the right thing?

Maybe I just need a pep talk or 2....or 10...

I have decided to enter a paralegal certification program this September. It is based on the BA I have already earned. I have really researched the field and believe that it is an ideal one for me. The school I have chosen is a great one, ABA-approved, with an internship.

I have been reading that you must have experience to be a paralegal. So, I have been applying for entry-level jobs in law firms. They are scaring me!

I KNOW I will have to take a low wage, because of my lack of experience. I am more interested in the experience.

So far, I have had 3 interviews. One claimed they wanted a clerical assistant. What they really wanted was a junior paralegal at a very low salary. The HR woman said the paras were angry they had chosen me because I have no experience (I was the only one who would take the money). I later declined when I found out this is a terrible firm. I should have known, the woman was very unprofessional.
Additional Details
That job was a long drive, too.

The second one was paying minimum wage, offering 20 hours a week, a 40 minute drive in nightmare traffic. I would have spent more in gas. Had it been closer, I would have taken it. Why did they think I could afford that? They are also having trouble filling it. This was a file clerk/admin. asst.

Number 3 was one lawyer. He would not commit to the hours, his wife works there occasionally and it would have been me with her. He is also 40 minutes away. I learned that he advertises for clients on Craiglist, claiming that he has the lowest fees around. He handles clients with serious criminal charges. I did not know that-he had said he was BK.
I was rather concerned about being alone with these individuals coming in, as was my husband, who is in law enforcement and felt it was not appropriate.

Should I just wait until I am finished with school or hope my intenship turns into a job? Am I doing something wrong?

What you should do is to talk to the counselor at the school you will be attending as to the proper procedure, or research on line........your experiences were rather unusual. But I believe, the school should really either place you or give you a list of suggested places to apply....

Stick with it, all will turn out well in the end, this is just a minor
journey glitch at the present time.

good luck to you.

I'm not convinced the school is truly necessary for what you want to do. But you've already chosen it so....
Everyone is going to offer you a low salary and expect long hours. We all face that when we are beginning. You just need to make yourself indispensable. That works every time. Your goal is to be the person that everyone trusts to "get it right".
Do you understand that most low paying occupations are low paying not because they are bad jobs. They pay low because so many people have the skills to do them. There are way too many people who have graduated from Paralegal School. Same as the 1,000 people a month who graduate from real estate school. Most of them end up working their first year for under $5,000. That's not what they were told when they enrolled in the "school".
Your B.A. is the key to your success. Not the paralegal classes. I think you are missing something here. You can accomplish more. Or find a way to pass the paralegal cert without the school.
